Ohio – -(AmmoLand.com)- Ohioans for Concealed Carry needs you to contact your Ohio Senator and Representative to urge them to vote to override Kasich's anti-citizen and anti-law enforcement veto of HB228!

As you may know, this bill makes improvements to Ohio's concealed carry law:

  • 1) Shifts the burden of proof in self defense shootings from the accused to the prosecutor (like 49 other states in the Union have).
  • 2) Strengthens Ohio Revised Code 9.68 to prevent municipalities from continuing to violate state preemption law without financial repercussions.
  • 3) Makes straw purchases a state crime.
  • 4) Removes the requirement to carry a second form of identification in addition to a concealed handgun license.
  • 5) Removes the requirement to post “no guns” signs in statutory locations that have opted to allow carry.
  • 6) Permits law enforcement officers without a CHL to carry into liquor establishments when off duty.
  • 7) Adds correction officers to the list of persons required to complete a firearms requalification program annually.
The bill is scheduled for a veto override vote in both chambers of the legislature after Christmas. We urge you to call AND write your legislators (see below for a sample email and info on how to find your legislators and how to determine your zip + four which is needed on some searches) and voice your strong support for the veto override. We vividly saw how grass roots from the opposition impacted pro-gun hearings in both chambers this year. We need to show both chambers of our legislature how strongly we support a veto override of this bill.

Below is the corrected link to a list of Senators and Representatives with their phone numbers and email address for your convenience. There are two tabs to the spreadsheet, one for the House and one for the Senate.

If you aren't sure what to say, copy and paste the following sample into an email, add the Senator or Representative's name and your name (and make any other changes you desire) before sending.

Senator/Representative ________________________________

I am a constituent in your district and I am outraged at Governor Kasich's veto of Substitute House
Bill 228. This bill makes common sense law. Ohio is the only state in the United States where a person who defends himself/herself and/or loved ones with deadly force is guilty until the person proves the actions were not illegal. Every other state in the union follows the principal of innocent until proven guilty. Substitute House Bill 228 aligns the principal of innocent until proven guilty with the rest of the Union.

This is not a one sided bill. There are provisions in this bill that make sense for both concealed handgun owners and law enforcement.

1) Strengthens Ohio Revised Code 9.68 to prevent municipalities from continuing to violate state preemption law without financial repercussions.
2) Makes straw purchases a state crime.
3) Shifts the burden of proof in self defense shootings from the accused to the prosecutor (as is the case in the other 49 states in the Union.)
4) Removes the requirement to carry a second form of identification in addition to a concealed handgun license.
5) Removes the requirement to post “no guns” signs in statutory locations that have opted to allow carry.
6) Permits law enforcement officers without a CHL to carry into liquor establishments when off duty.
7) Adds correction officers to the list of persons required to complete a firearms requalification program annually.

I strongly urge you to attend the veto override session for Substitute House Bill 228and vote to override this anti-citizen and anti-law enforcement veto.

Sincerely,

Ohioans-For-Concealed-Carry-logo.jpg About Ohioans for Concealed Carry:

Ohioans for Concealed Carry, founded in 1999, is a grassroots political activist organization. When founded, the primary goal of OFCC was getting concealed carry passed into law in Ohio. With that accomplished, our mission became to refine the concealed carry law and to expand and preserve the rights of all gun owners in Ohio. Visit: Ohioccw.org

BFA and NRA ILA are campaigning for this one too. I have already sent a couple emails. It really bugs me that Kasich got himself elected with the help of the gun owners and now he's decided to punch us in the gut and show his true colors on his way out of office. I hope everybody gets behind this and we get it passed.

Yet there is a problem in the bill. It's something like the wording is in section (B) but should be in section (H) on the Shockwave shotgun style firearms. So since it's in section (B), it also applies to....all long guns. Effectively a serious legal problem.

While talking with my state rep over the holidays, I brought up this problem. He asked me to write up a description and said he would show it to the house leadership. So I emailed him a description. I don't doubt that BFA and OFCC will also be pushing house and senate members to fix this.

Seems to be the thing for politicians to do these days, even at the highest level. :fire:

Hopefully people remember this when Kasich runs as a third party candidate in 2020 and pulling a Perot

The error in the shockwave language was discovered and brought to light by ofcc members. Who worked hand in hand with legislators throughout the whole debacle.

Emergency legislation was crafted. The updated bill to fix the errors was signed by Gov DeWine just Monday

There are several open threads describing the details over on ofcc here's one...

The 1st post (OP hso:thumbup:)referenced Ohioans for Concealed Carry, My 2 posts provided info from same. OFCC did the heavy lifting on this one.

If anyone at anytime wants the details on Ohio inner workings for 2A, that won't be reversed later, or website scrubbed, facts vs. horn-tooting, your go-to is https://ohioccwforums.org

Moved out of Ohio long ago. Went to Texas. Glad I did. Ohio has too many Democrats. When Democrats are in, organized crime flourishes and the public pays the price. The left wingers are content to strip rights and funds from the public; yet Democrats are happy to fund organized crime as it provides big block votes and favors. Democrats create more victims than guns ever did. Maybe we should forget gun bans and consider banning Democrats. I loved Ohio and it saddens me what the Democrats have done to destroy it.

Ohio has been under Republican control since 1991(less4 years of Strickland), CCW has been on the books for 15 years. With our OC + CC I’d argue we were ahead of Texas prior to their OC victory and now at least equal.

Yup. I've found that people are often misinformed about this, especially folks who don't live here (or haven't lived here for a while, like Gator Weiss). Ohio has some of the best gun laws in the nation currently. Not the best, but still better than most. Been better than Texas since the 1860's and it's still that way.
