winchester 70 dbm 284 win

I have a friend that bought a new Model 70 DBM in 270 Winchester in the mid-1990's. I fired the rifle several times and know something about one. First, make sure you don't loose the magazine. The original magazine furnished with the rifle worked fine but when he tried several replacement magazines none of them would work. Also, I was really disappointed when we removed the stock. Winchester had bonded a piece of steel in the stock in the recoil lug area so the recoil lug of the receiver rested on this piece of metal. I didn't like this at all and I thought the rifle would have worked better without this method of supporting the recoil lug. The rifle does shoot minute of angle groups and my friend used it to take one of the biggest and prettiest 10 pt whitetail bucks ever taken in the County.

The box code for a 284 Winchester push feed box magazine is the letter "C." The box code for a controlled feed box magazine is the letters "CC." The second C stands for claw. This is something we didn't know when we were trying to find a magazine for his rifle and it caused a lot of confusion. These codes are for a 284 Winchester only. In case you are interested Midwest Gun Works has a CC magazine for sale for $115. Their code is 9837. I would be interested to know if your rifle is a push feed or a controlled feed?

The CC indicates you have a controlled feed rifle which is what I would prefer. Production of the Model 70 classic DBM 284 rifle began in 1994 and probably ended that same year. I read somewhere that less than 200 of them were made. If you remove the stock please let me know if it has a steel insert behind the recoil lug. Hope you really enjoy the rifle.

Yes, that's it. I haven't seen it for 20 years and it's different from what I remembered. It looks like there are two pieces of metal, one in front of the recoil lug and one behind it, or is it one continuous piece? The glass bedding is about the same quality as what I remembered and when I first noticed it I think I was more disappointed with the quality of the work than with the metal. I've never seen that on another Model 70. Some Winchester engineer probably got a bonus for coming up with that idea. I still haven't figured out if it supported the recoil lug or kept the stock from cracking. Maybe they thought the stock was weaker because of the detachable magazine and thought it needed extra support. What do you think? Thanks for the picture.

I took a look at GunBroker and there is a Winchester 70 DBM 270 Winchester buy it now price of $600. There is also a Winchester 70 DBM 7 MM Magnum buy it now price at $700. I remember what my friend paid for his rifle and I think his rifle sold for about $600 when it was new. If someone really wanted that 284 it could bring a good price. I'm not a rifle pricing expert so maybe someone else will come up with an opinion. I know about pre 64 Model 70's but not about the later rifles. I think it would be a good rifle for a hunter. Rifles using 7 MM bullets are popular today.

For good reason too. I've been toying with having my 7mm-08 Tikka rechambered to .284 for about a year now. That is such a great hunting round.
