Handgun cartridge carbines: Whaddya got and why?

Hmmm, I only have two "carbines", both 44mag. Both Ruger, one is a 96/44 lever gun and the other is the semi-auto Deerfield carbine.

I do have an 1873 Winchester in 32-20, but it's a 30" barrel.

How has your 96/44 performed for you? I've had it on my Gunbroker watch list awhile, but I've yet to actually handle and example.

I have a Marlin Camp 9, Marlin 357 and 44 mag rifles and of the 3 the 357 is my favorite and most favorite of all the guns I own. I had a Marlin CB 32 mag till just a month ago and I sold it. I just didn't shoot it and it was the heaviest of the 3 Marlins.

Some will say a PPC is not a real rifle that you have to have a bigger round like a 45-70 or a bottle necked cartridge to have a "Real" rifle. I don't thing so. Its like saying the only hammer you need is a 12lb sledge. I use a 16oz straight claw far more than a sledge hammer. They are all tools and I get the most use out of the smaller powered guns. I would like to pick up a new Marlin 357 lever so I have one for each of my sons when I go and one of the new Ruger 9mm carbines. Its just a matter of money.:(

I really like the OPs collection.

I had a Marlin 9mm Camp Carbine briefly and almost immediately regretted trading it off. I prefer its mostly wood and steel construction over the PC9 -- the main advantage of the Ruger for me is Glock magazine compatibility.

A Marlin lever action in 357 mag that I've put a Lyman aperture sight on. May be my favorite long arm. Had a good local smith back in the day do a trigger job and slicked up the action.

Now I want a 327 mag long arm. So far as I know Henry is the only company that makes one and it's out of my price range. I think the 327 is the modern day 32-20 and makes for an excellent pistol/carbine combination.

I also want an AR in 45acp.

I wrote Henry requesting the .327 Federal for their single shot line -- they wrote back "will do", so perhaps we'll see one someday.

I want a lot more guns than I'll ever be able to pay for!

Thompson M1 in .45ACP:

I inherited it...which is why I've kept it. Probably the most useless gun I own.

Colt AR6951 9mm:

Bought it as a "trainer" for my HD AR. Have run it in a couple carbine classes and now use it for PCC Division in IDPA

I've also got a Marlin Cowboy in .45Colt that I used for cowboy Action Shooting. It's had an action job and is very slick. Unfortunately it hasn't seen the light of day since I quit shooting CAS.

That marteeny sure is an interesting critter. makes me wish I had brought some more back from afg (we are allowed to bring back things that old). As for me, I have a FN PS90 I got in an insane deal, and a PC9 carbine I picked up a few weeks ago in a good trade. I have had the Ruger out of the box twice- haven't decided if I am going to keep it or not.

Nothing but 45s!

Currently 4 revolvers in 45 LC, one rifle (Marlin '94) and a carbine: Rossi 92

Currently two 1911s and an UBU High Point carbine.

45s make big holes that are useful in rapid exsanguination and debilitation.

I currently have a sub-2000. I bought it because I wanted a rifle that would break down to be very compact and easy to carry in a range bag. I have only had it for a few months, and only had it out a few times, but it is great to accompany on a trip to the indoor range, and a hoot plinking with a 32 round magazine. It need some refinement of the trigger, and I would like to give the improved rear sight from Mcarbo.

Dh1633am, that custom rolling block is awesome. I would really like break action .38 special. I have been teetering on the edge of picking up a Henry single shot, and shortening the barrel, and adding peep sights. I would really like it to be break down thought. The Midland Arms rifle looks like it could be a decent (and low cost) option, but the centerfire barrels appear to be delayed indefinitely.

The other purpose I found I like my AR9 for is as a camping gun when I go fishing. I go on fishing trips every summer where we boat in about 30 miles and then camp on islands. The AR9 packs nicely in the rod locker of my boat and doesn’t mind if it gets wet. Also shares ammo with the 9mm pistol I’m using carrying.

Although I don’t really like stainless rifles, I’d like to get a stainless Rossi 1892 for the same purpose to go with a 45 colt Redhawk.

Have a braced CZ Scorpion pistol and various leverguns in .32-20, .38-40, .357Mag, .44Spl, .44Mag and need a .45Colt to fill a void after selling one.

It took me four years to get the roller done. It started life as a No 5 with a shot out barrel that looked like a sewer pipe. The first thing I did was buy another No 5 that was in better shape. Better to shore up the collection. I then started the project. Barrel is green mountain. I left the barrel heavy at 16.5 inches. The rail was custom made. Had to have the rail. It attaches to the barrel.

The finish is Alumihyde from Brownells. I wanted a beefy front stock. So I started with a block of walnut. Made the barrel channel and then cut it down piece by piece in my table saw until it was about right.

The front of the stock is held in place by the aluminum ring around the barrel that also serves to hold the front sling. Finish is with bees wax mixed with paint thinner. No stain was used. Scope is a long eye relief Busnell. All the screws in the roller were replaced with new. The Rollers were pretty tight already. Trigger spring was replaced with a coil spring. Spare parts including the crappy stock were sold to help finance the project. Below are some pictures before the metal work was finished when I was fitting the stock. Butt plate is brass and home made. Got the brass from my late father in law who worked at a brass mill. Came from scrap bin.

The scope in the one picture was from one of my .22 rifles. Just wanted to check how I was going to mount things. How does she shoot. Pretty nice. Does not like anything lower than about 255 grains. 200 grain semi's left sideways looking holes on the paper. Recoil is super light even with hotter loads. Figured it could handle a little bit hotter since it was based on a 7x57 action that could handle about twice what a hot 45 colt would be pressure wise. I don't load it anywhere close to that.
