Scope question

The overall zoom range is 8-32x, but at 20x the dots in the reticle represent 1/2 mil (2 mils between) so that you can estimate range. Zoom to 20x, range target, adjust elevation with turret, then zoom in or out and fire. You’ll need to learn about the mildot system if you’re looking to shoot varying distances but for bench work at known distances, simply know your come ups.

Yes, since it is a second focal plain reticle, the dots are only accurate at one magnification. In this case, the maker chose 20X. So they are accurate at 20X. The next easiest is to use 10X and double the numbers, each .5 mil dot is now a full mil. Each power could be used, but the math would suck.

Also, the turrets are MOA, so I would skip it and find a scope with a MOA reticle with MOA turrets or a Mil reticle with Mil turrets. Go MOA/MOA or Mil/Mil, but don't mix them.

The OP’s biggest hurdles in finding a suitable scope are budget constraints and his location (England) which brings export restrictions to the table.

For those who did not see the OP’s other post on the matter, the following gives a bit of information. Keep in mind that due to export restrictions suggestions for anything from Primary Arms, SWFA, etc. won’t be viable options.

“I have a Tikka TAC A1 in .223 and I just don't know what scope to get. I've been looking at Vortex scopes but ones like the Crossfire II and the Diamondback seem more marketed to hunters and I'm unsure if they're suitable for 100m target shooting.

I usually shoot at 100m and rarely 600m (very rarely, if ever).

What scope do I get? My budget is about £300 ($400) but would rather spend a bit less if I'm honest.

I'm stumped and would appreciate any help.

I currently have a NIKKO STIRLING PANAMAX 3-9X40 but I did some research and apparently, that's only good for .22lr or air rifles? I currently use it on my .22lr”

I handled the scope and I really liked it. I don't think the conversion is a massive deal. I'm still fairly new to shooting and reloading and I'm not looking to be pinpoint accurate but still fairly accurate. I'm happy with the purchase.

In the UK we do not nearly have as much choice as you guys, yeah we CAN get Vortex and other brands but most shops do not stock them. Air rifle shooting is the main shooting sport over here, so naturally, all the scopes are air rifle scopes. I am happy with the Hawke I have now but I think for my future guns I'm going to splash out on a nice Vortex or Leupold. Thanks for all your help it really really helped me.

Joseph, are Meopta and and German Precision Optics sold in the UK? If so I’d take the cheapest scope either one makes over a Crossfire or Diamondback any day.
I have a GPO p3, which basically is the cheapest, and is sure agree!

I have had a Hawke 4-16x50 for 10 years now. It has been my load workup scope for all my rifles. It is definitely a decent scope for the money.
Be sure to look through a Vortex before you buy it. My eyes don't like the lower level ones. The higher end ones are clear though.

FYI. This from Ilya Koshkin on Vortex. I respect Koshkin.

Vortex makes a broad range of products manufactured by different OEMs. And they are by far the largest company in the sportoptics world right now. Given how much product they ship, there are bound to be people who have issues with some of them and take it personally. They are usually the ones who yell much louder than satisfied customers.

I would not get the Crossfire or Strike Eagle. Diamondback is quite decent. PST Gen 2 has exceeded my expectations, so far (especially the 3-15x44). PST Gen 1 and HST I was mostly not that crazy about (a couple of models excepted). Razors of all flavors have been uniformly good.
