It was either here or on one of the handgin forums that I first heard about Chore Boy for barrel lead remover. Got a chance to use it today.....glad I didn't skip the forum that day; woo hoo, boy does it work. Also good for the forcing cone if you spin it. Thanks guys!

PWC, I've never heard of this product. How does one use it to clean barrels?

In your local grocery store on the dish soap/ dishwasher soap aisle....It's a copper pot scrubber. Take it apart and wrap it around an old brush for a tight fit.

Note: Look SPECIFICALLY for the label on the box that says "PURE COPPER"
Absolutely. Check the copper strands with a magnet. If they stick, they are copper plated steel and not pure copper. Chore Boy or Libman sell 100% copper scrubbers.

Wrap it around and old bore brush
Wrap copper strand around old bore brush like below and after several passes back and forth, your leading is removed and barrel is clean. No need for messy solvents. Easy.

Also check out Glen Fryxell's book (Bottom of Chapter 7) on lead removal - http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Chapter_7_Leading.htm

To add to the conversation. Just keep adding more strands of copper to the brush as it get easy to pass through the bore, any loose strands can be cleaned up with scissors every once in a while. After a few uses the bore brush gets a nice base or copper built up and less copper strands are need.

Be patient taking the copper pad apart, once you get it figured out the strand unravels nicely but getting it started can be a pain. The Chore Boy pad is one continuous strand of copper.

Once again make sure its a pure copper scrubber pad and not steel plated. If the pad is the cheapest one on the shelf its probably steel plated.

I saw this tip about a month ago and am glad I tried it. Sadly, finding the pure copper chore boy product is a no-go in my area, so my wife bought them for me form Amazon. All we have around here are the generic, or scotch brite brands that are copper coated steel. They're magnetic when you test them.

I had a Ruger BH 41 magnum that would lead like crazy until I had my cylinder

I've used Chore Boy (copper) for years.

Works like a charm, dry or with solvents. When "fresh" it will rip the lead out in strands. A package lasts a long, long time.

From what I remember a few years ago, the drug users were using the pure copper ones for something to do with making or using meth or some other drug. That is why you don't see many around in grocery stores.

Of course they were...

I am getting so tired [THR friendly] of having my access to consumer products restricted because some dumb smucks do stupid stuff with said products. Guns, magazines, pseudoephedrine, codeine cough medicine, all copper chore boys, and coming soon- Imodium.

Can't agree more. I'm surprised we still have bottles because of the old shake and bake.
It took a while to get any choreboy near me.

No need to shop in the grocery store cleaning section....I get mine from Brownells.

It's a whole bunch cheaper at Home Depot. And if you're near a store pick up at store is free shipping.

I recently bought copper Chore Boy and it passed the magnet test. Turned out it was stainless steel, which is usually non-magnetic. So be careful, as stainless can scratch steel, depend on the formula and heat treat. That's when I was told about the bronze wool, which I hadn't seen on a store shelf since I was in high school. 50 years ago.
