I have a couple of the Star BMs that J&G has had on sale for the last month. They function and shoot fine with FMJs, but I’m having trouble finding a HP load. I’ve tried what I have on hand, and nothing passes a simple function test. They all get hung up with the hp on the feed ramp. I’ve tried XTPs and Hornady’s Critical Duty.

What JHP ammo works in your Star BM?

This is not for EDC mind you, but will see regular use riding in the glove box.

Never had Spanish handgun. I would try Remington RTP9MM1 and Federal 9BP/BX. Fedral first because it's cheaper to buy. If those don't work you're done.

Somebody was making a bullet with a polymer ball just behind the nose and little slits down the side which looked and was supposed to feed like a normal FMJ, but expand like a hollowpoint to skirt around state HP bans, but I cant find it on the interweb anymore.....?

I'm not sure it's widely available but here it is: https://corbon.com/glaser/pow-rball
That might be it, its been awhile since I read about it. Coulda sworn the one I saw had a full jacket with no exposed polymer- but maybe the lawyers made them alter the final design?

In any case, since this has a profile very similiar to FMJ, it may solve the OPs issue.:)

I bought three extra mags with my BM (four total). One of the four refuses to feed hollow points. I'd start by getting another mag.

Boy, I had to send my BM back, and J&G replaced it due to malfunctions, and I couldn't even buy another spare. Haven't wrung this one out, so have no info re: HP ammo, but I would agree with trying a different mag. My guess is it's the feed lips, esp. on an older gun.

A little update... th original function test was with some dummy XTP rounds I keep around for such an occasion. And when they didn’t work I tried going through a mag of Critical Duty by hand. Each time, less than half chambered. This was tried in 4 mags and 2 guns.

Today I gave something a try figuring it couldn’t hurt. Mag loaded with live XTPs, topped off with 1 FMJ. FMJ chambers just fine, which I knew. But upon firing it, and each following round, the JHP chambered just fine. So my only issue is in chambering the 1st round. I’ll continue to try to find a JHP that I don’t have this issue. But for the time being, I’ll just have each mag topped with a FMJ.

Did you slingshot the slide or use the slide release when function checking? I have pistols that will only function by slingshotting the slide with hollow points when loading the first round. Using the slide stop may not generate enough slide velocity.

I was going to recommend exactly the two that paulsj recommended. I've personally used thousands of rounds of the 115 jhp Federal, and I was issued the Remington 115 jhp in the +P version for years. I always suspected the Remington ammo, with it's old tec bullet and high flash powder, was issued because it did feed reliably in any of the issued or authorized 9mm firearms. I have used a bunch of different 9mm jhp factory ammo. I know of no jhps that feed more reliably....

Slide release to start with. When I had issues with that, I tried slingshotting it. Slightly better, but still not dependable.

I’ll have to get some Feds and Rems to try. I’ve never had an issue with XTPs until this gun, so that’s all I had on hand. Thanks for the suggestions, and any mor that may come.
