I would like recommendations for competent M1 Garand gunsmiths that I can ship my work to, preferably from personal experience.

So far below, we have CMP, Shuff's Parkerizing, Dow's Arms Room, and my original suggestion of Warbirds Custom. Any others?

This conversation veered away from my intended question, which is my fault for adding unnecessary detail. Hence my above restatement -- my apologies.

Years ago I did that sort of work, still have all the tools but no longer re barrel Garands. I would take the advice above even if you have to catch shipping cost and ship the rifle to one of the two CMP shops and have them do the work. It's what they do and to re barrel a Garand is not a simple twist off and twist on. The right tools are needed to align the barrel. There are a few other caveats involved to do it right. I would deal only with a shop experienced with rifles like the M1 and M14 (M1A). All things considered I would give the work to the CMP. I would also buy the barrel from them and they offer a good assortment.

Due to 30-06 M2 ball ammo costs and scarcity in my neck of the woods, I have been thinking seriously about converting my M1 Garand to 7.62x51. It's a Blue Sky marked barrel, so no collector tears.

The plan at the moment is to first buy a new Criterion barrel, then ship the action and new barrel someplace for the installation. One strong possibility is Warbirds Custom Guns in Texas, but I'd be interested in recommendations for other M1 smiths that you fine folks have had recent positive experiences with.

Where are you located? Because I know one fo the best M1 Garand smiths on the planet.
Bruce Dow has written articles for Scott Duff. If you are near Pasco County FL that is the place to go.
Dow's Arms Room on US301 in Dade City. "Accuracy Spoken Here" is the shop's slogan.

1. This is good copper jacketed M2 ball - at a good price. Brand new in Factory sealed cans.

2. For a re-Bbl., Tim Shuffin at shuffsparkerizing.com is a very good source.

Barrel Replacement $175-$395
If your M1 is in need of a barrel replacement, I can provide a brand new Criterion or Standard Parts Company .30-06 or .308 barrel for $200 in 30/06 or $200 in .308 plus $75 for installation. Or you can send just your barreled receiver (barrel, stripped receiver, and stripped bolt) and the installation is only $50. If you have your own barrel, I can install that for you, or I can re-crown your old one. And if you want something really unique, I can install one of my .35 Whelen barrels on your rifle for $395.

He is a staple over at the CMP board.

He does outstanding work, and you will have a tough time beating his price.

Sadly, I'm smack in the middle of the People's Republic on the left coast. I don't travel much, so shipping is the more cost-effective route for me. I'll check out Dow's on Facebook though, thanks.

I have a couple of things for you to think about......a loud gasp from across the inter-webs.....not this clown again....yup here I am this clown.

First off I offer you a link

https://codes.findlaw.com/us/title-18-crimes-and-criminal-procedure/18-usc-sect-922.html

Now the meat and potatoes of this that applies to the markings. There is discussion on the alter importers sn#.....well the name on the barrel is not a sn#, but it is the importer. So for the Feds to track a gun and where it came from they need to know who the importer was....a replaced barrel will "alter" that.....is that a foul?

Just pointing that out as you might want to look deeper into that.

As to the Blue Sky being Poo pooed....I have never really understood this. Why? It most likely came from south korea, and likely saw some interesting things there.....why do these get looked down upon where others do not? Always found that interesting. One of mine is a Blue Sky, and I doubt I would ever alter it, erase its history.

Food for thought, but I don't wanna overthink this.

Here's my take: if the Feds consider a serialized receiver a firearm, and if they _really, really_ cared about keeping import marks on firearms sacrosanct, they would stipulate that they had to appear on the receiver, not a replaceable component. Also, assuming the receiver SN is in some re-import or Military Assistance Program database, then they have the means to track it back to Korea if they feel the need to. If its not, it's currently in the People's Republic of California's illegal DROS database as produced by Springfield Arsenal and owned by me, with no reference to Blue Sky or Korea.

As for the Blue Sky quality thing, I agree in my case. My own rifle was pretty nice except for the stock (foreign replacement, kindling condition) and a couple of the springs, which I've replaced. My barrel has a bit more throat erosion than I would like, but another owner might not care. Bruce Canfield said Blue Sky guns were mostly beaters that the Koreans no longer wanted in his huge book on the Garand (which I just got for Christmas!) so what do we know.

The replies here have drifted off topic -- could we please return to the original question, namely recommended M1 Garand gunsmiths that one can ship work to?

Fpgt72 - I had a friend bought a Blue Sky and front sight had to be all the way left hanging off the bartel to have a y windage on the rear sight. He wasn't a gunny like us, could have become one, but he just sold it off.

Hay remember we are talking about the guberment here....logic and reason have no business with them.

+1 for the CMP Custom Shop. I took the CMP Advanced Maintenance Class at Anniston and got to build a "Special Grade" from parts using a refurbed SA 1943 receiver (ser. no. 22222XX appealed to me plus it had the revised heat treatment diamond on it), a new Criterion barrel, and parts selected to be approximately 1943 correct (uncut op rod, lock-bar rear sight, round top gas lock with no hump, SA trigger group, etc in a new CMP walnut stock with new stock metal). Spinning on the barrel is non-trivial since the gas port has to be precisely aligned for function and for the front sight to sit perfectly upright on the gas cylinder.

CMP has probably rebarreled more M1s than anyone currently doing this work and they completely stand behind their work. They can sell you either a criterion barrel or a Krieger match barrel at a great price and their charge for this service is eminently reasonable.

That's good to know, thanks. Have you had dealings with Shuff's yourself? I'm familiar with their Mini-G conversion, but haven't talked with any customers to date. His pricing looks good to me.

Have talked w/ him RE: some projects - but have yet to employ him personally. (as I have been fortunate in that all my SG U.S. RIFLE CAL. .30 M1's have near-new bores - Thank You, CMP)

But, had I a mind to re-Bbl. one in .308?

Tim would be my 1st choice.
