I'm seriously considering a Ruger 1911 10 mm. I have recently gotten into 10 mm and very much like my Glock 20. I do notice the Glock 20 full size provides some challenges for keeping high-powered defensive rounds On Target. Mine also has the tendency to do an unintended double tap possibly from recoil and muzzle jump.

The Ruger 1911 looks great has a good trigger and would weigh more and presumably reduce muzzle jumping recoil .
It's advertised sort of as a hunting pistol. Is that realistic?
I hunt occasionally with a 454 Casull and 357 Magnum the 454 usually Sports an Ultradot.
What is your thoughts and experience with the Ruger 1911 10 mm I can get one for about $750 new.
All my other autoloaders are pretty much striker-fired I don't have any 1911 I know others seem to be crazy about them they've never appealed to me much but this one does.

Based on your other thread ( https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/sig-sauer-p365-massive-headaches.849188/ ) and your lack of desire to change your grip to accommodate a different pistol, I'd pass on the Ruger SR1911, and stay with your Glock or look for an XD in 10mm.

Watch this Doug Koenig video on "Handgun Grip". Note where he puts his right hand thumb. If you don't ride the thumb safety on a 1911 you'll have a good chance of engaging it while firing. I suspect this would be difficult for you.

I wouldn't expect the Ruger to have less punch than the Glock 20. The Glock, being a polymer frame flexes and absorbs some of the recoil. Full power loads in my Delta don't flex, they punch. But I would think that anyone who shoots 454 :what:will have no problem whatsoever with a 10mm 1911:D

Good Pistol. I bought one when they first came out.

The barrel is fully supported so you can shoot the really spicy 10mm. I really enjoy shooting mine, I bring this to
the range quite often.

I've shot them both and could not say felt recoil was significantly different. The SR1911 is an excellent handgun, designed for target shooting, but will perform well as a hunting handgun. Many have been successful with it. Mine had a gritty trigger OOB. BTW, I'm not a 1911 fanboy.

I use a RIA 10mm 1911 as my woods gun and hunting backup. With my handloads it is extremely accurate and has been reliable, I imagine the Ruger (being slightly better made, IMO, from those I've looked at) would be great.

I dont notice a real difference with warmish loads (12.2 or 12.4 AA#9 under an XTP 200 gr, around 1200 fps) between the 1911 and my Glock 21 with a 10mm conversion. Much like .45 feels pretty similar between the two platforms to me.

I will take 10mm in a 1911 over .357 magnum or .44 magnum revolvers* every time though, I prefer the way the autoloader recoils and gets back on target over the wheel guns.

*assuming DA revolvers like my GP100 or Redhawk. I really love single actions like my Vaqueros and have been considering adding a Blackhawk for hunting as well (for the better sights).

If I owned and successfully hunted with a 454, I doubt I would be in the market for a less powerful hunting handgun to replace it with.

I’ve successfully taken deer with a super Redhawk in 44 mag and am glad I gave it every advantage I could at the reloading bench prior to the hunt.

I have the Ruger 1911 I like and carry it, "enhanced" the sights to make them easier for me to acquire.
All these are 10mm

I killed a deer with the Delta (first 10mm 1911 I bought) used 155 XTP with good result.

Sounds great thanks.
As for the comment about being unwilling to adjust my grip that was because the p365 Sig had so many other issues I had no confidence in it. Plus that was for defensive carry and I would not carry a gun I can't rely on.
Yes I've taken deer with Super Redhawk 454 and I would not be replacing that I would be adding this not just for hunting but it definitely has a cool Factor and I think it could help me be more accurate with 10 mm.

10mm is a natural fit for a 1911 so I say go for it. I'm eyeing one as well as a more fun range gun than a glock 20, although I'd give the glock the edge on utility for sure, especially an MOS model with a nice dot (I'm partial to the vortex viper red dots myself)

Super Redhawk in 454 is far and away more ethical than 10mm- I wouldn't hunt deer with 10mm or 223 or any of the other marginal cartridge just imho.

Sweet!!! Where did you get those grips or did they come on it?does Ruger sell those or where do you get those I think the one I'm planning to get comes stock with black rubber grips of some kind. Anyone have one in excellent condition for sale otherwise I'm headed to the internet to buy one...

Nobody else is gonna touch this?

OK, fine. If you're accidentally triggering 2nd shots with a Glock as the gun moves in recoil, you're going to really be prone to that with a 1911, which will have a lighter and shorter trigger.

But it should not occur with either gun. 10mm isn't 454, and the recoil is not something that should cause the gun to move so much in your grip that it's banging back and forth into your trigger finger. Nor should you be clenching your trigger finger in an effort to get the gun back under control. Something is wrong with your grip on the Glock if you're accidentally triggering a second shot as the gun moves in recoil. That reflects a loss of control of the gun. You need to sort that out. A 1911 isn't going to fix that for you.

They come stock with black rubber Hogue grips.

The ones on mine are authentic Ruger Cocobolo wood grips I ordered from their website, about $30 plus shipping if I recall.

Only thing to note is that they are a bit thicker than a lot of 1911 grips, thus making the overall grip thickness bigger. I dont mind as I have extra big mitts.

94C37606-A457-49F4-AA7A-7B8D30E28A90.jpeg 10mm from a 1911 certainly works. 3 quick shots at 7yds as he passed 2 passed through, one hit a rib and blew apart on the exit side. Deer ran maybe 40 yards. This gun was a Delta Elite. I no longer own a 10mm but it’s high on my list, and the Ruger you mentioned is leading the pack in what I would buy, I just have other financial priorities right now. The other guns to consider are a witness limited and a RIA “ultra” or “match”.

It will be my next pistol. As soon as I sell my unfired 70's Blackhawk 357/9 convertible and my Tracker 17 HMR with mount and scope. I'm at the point I'm condensing the numbers and selecting things I can use. That Ruger would be a minor improvement over my 4" 624 and my 4 5/8" 44 special Flattop.
Been envying it for a year or so.

I like mine a lot I put a Vortex Venom on it trying to get where I can hunt with it. You can get wraparound grips to make it larger in your hand. I personally like the rubber grips on it plenty grip room

I've been a 1911 guy since 1973. I've built a few, worked on many, shot IDPA matches with them, and carry them daily. Both of my sons were brought up shooting 1911s. My youngest, who lives in the Kalispell area of Montana, bought himself a Rock Island 10mm 1911 a couple of years ago for last ditch predator defense. When Springfield came out with the XDm 10mm not long ago he bought the 5.25" model. He has mothballed the 1911 and now carries the XD.

I've shot both of these pistols and if I weren't a dyed-in-the-wool 1911 fanboy, I'd get the XD. Straight out of the box its trigger beats the Glock trigger hands down. Plop a little green down for a Powder River replacement trigger and it's nearly the equal of the best 1911 triggers. 100% reliable and 15 + 1 rounds of Buffalo Bore 10mm Outdoorsman (220 gr. Hard Cast - FN (1,200 fps/ME 703 ft lbs)) make this potent medicine for the critters inhabiting the Montana Rockies.

This past hunting season he got a deer using the XD.
