1. Find an American made factory loaded HP round from a common brand. 2. Test fire some in your pistol 3. If they work ok, load your magazines with the same round. 4. Practice with whatever ball ammo functions in your pistol, concentrate on putting holes in the target where and when you need to.

Money has been tight lately, so I was going though some.old ammo before.buying anything new. The price of SD ammo is crazy nowadays

My personal choice is Hornady American Gunner. It uses their proven XTP bullet.

I have compared it directly to Hornady Custom ammo I have and cannot tell any difference at all. Hornady lists the same velocity for both cartridges, they use the same XTP bullet and the cartridges measure the same. My conclusion is it the same round. Some goes into a box marked Custom for folks who think higher price means better bullet.

I buy it when it is on sale. In fact I brought 4 boxes earlier this month when it was on sale for $13.99 a box of 25.

A big benefit is with the lower price we can practice with it more often.

If money is tight, pick up some Winchester White Box JHP or Remington Green & White JHP. I think you're better off buying it and cycling through it every year than you are hanging onto ammo for 20 years because you don't want to shoot it. The WWB is $16 per 50 locally in my area, and the Remington JHPs are pretty close to that.

Winchester White Box JHP has some very impressive tests results on YouTube. I want to try it but I can not find anyone local that sells it. I most likely will end up ordering 500 rounds online. Worse case is I will have some affordable practice ammo and once fired brass.

I use Remington Golden Saber in my Shield. I got a deal on a bulk amount from Sportsmanguide awhile ago, so I can practice with what I carry. Just ran four mags through it today.

Your carry ammo is almost 20 years old? I'd say it's time to cycle it out.
If it were carried daily for all that time, I might agree. Not if it was stored in a reasonable environment. In the mid 1980s, I reloaded a batch of .45 ACP. Then, I lost interest and it sat in my basement for thirty years. I used it up when I started shooting again a couple of years ago. Every single cartridge fired on the first strike.

In about 1999 I got a .30 Cal ammo can full of mil-surp 9mm (British I think) headstamped 1942. Over the following 5 or so years I shot every bit of it without issue through my C Series Hi Power. Properly stored ammo does not go bad.

I've shot about 150 rounds each of the WWB 147 and 124 JHP 'Personal Defense' thru the Shield and it seemed fine to me.

I've found it at a few Big5's if you have those around you. $16-18 per 50 if I remember right.

I carry plus P 124gr Winchester PDX Defender ammo. I bought a bunch a while ago and it runs good and shoots to point of aim in my Shield

Find a quality JHP that feeds well in your gun that is reasonably accurate. You don't need $1 a round ammo.

Standard pressure ammo is fine. +P only gives you 100-150 fps more and that's in a longer barrel than your Shield.

The comparison between various 9mm 124 grain loads that Paul Harrell did seems to be useful in this discussion:

I loved the line about the price of HST...it is the one area where HST really is exceptional.

I'd like to hear everyone's opinions on SD ammo for my 9mm Shield.

I pretty much use Hornady Critical Defense across the board. It runs flawlessly (so far) in my guns. It’s generally available and priced so I don’t have to worry about shooting a few magazines now and then.

I’m sure there is something slicker faster and cooler out there. And if it makes you feel better to have some super secret squirrel rounds in you pistol, please have at it. But I think any quality ammunition will serve you.

I use federal hst in all my carry pistols. It reviews well and if you find the 50 round boxes it’s usually only 50-60 cents per round.

If you go to YouTube and input shootingthebull410 9mm ammo quest in the search box you will find a bunch of short barrel tests of 9mm defense ammo by shootingthebull410. He uses the FBI test protocol and has tested a large variety of JHP ammo from standard Winchester White Box to the exotics like the Lehigh.

Thaaaats where I saw the WWB HP tested in the Shield. Quite a few others, too, like you said.

Thanks for mentioning it.

Remington 115 hp 100 round value pack. Cheap enough for practice, accurate, and it tests well out of the Nano. I also carry Federal 150 HST. Expensive, accurate, and soft shooting. It is designed specifically for short barrel and expands well.

good luck
