Uses for Full Size .45s

I originally bought my Full Sized 45ACP (Sig 1911) to shoot bowling pins, which it did very well. It has since been used for a Gunsite class, been silenced, given home defense duty, used for steel shoots and now is retired to casual shooting.

Recently dusted off my ultra carry and hit the range with it and remembered why I prefer full steel 1911s. So jumpy for a 1911 and terrible splits during drills, plus I dislike the sights on mine.

And a bobtail commander conceals equally as easy for me, just a bit heavier.

Back in the safe it went, probably trade bait this summer for a 9mm CCO.

Funny how we are all different. I shoot my Ultra CDP and other officer-style 1911s far better and quicker than the full-size guns. But I have always been kinky for snubby guns of every format.

Two guns I shoot every time I go to the range; a .22 pistol & a 1911. The others alternate but those two are always in the gun bag. However it's true that almost everyone else shoots more modern style pistols in 9 mm. I still don't own one.

This one will be shooting steel this year. But first I have to fire up my reloader and rap off 500 or 1000 rounds. It's been waiting patiently in the safe for a lot of years. Seems I just didn't have the time, and then a bunch more things got in the way.

Because it’s too big to CCW here in Florida my ‘62 colt 1911 sits in my dads bedside drawer. It’s the only gun he can halfway hit what he points it at, other than my mossberg 500 12g.

They take care of me. I take great care of them. Late at night, we cuddle and snuggle. I softly whisper to them that in the morning, the most pleasing of them will be fed shiny new ammo and enjoy some range time. They always respond with affection. Each and every one will defend me without hesitation. Love my little harem.

I used to carry a full size 1911 on a daily basis. Now that I'm a senior citizen I use my 1911s for range shooting. With the recent gun ban legislation in the City of Pittsburgh, I may have to dust off the 1911s for EDC. We shall see. tom.

I didnt get my first 1911 until I was nearly 50 years old, but I was pretty sure i was gonna like it before i even tried it.
...and I was right.

I use them as Browning intended...as subjects of photos for strangers to view on the Internet.

If by large frame low capacity .45's you mean the 1911 they sit unused in the gun vault.

I have three 1911's each set up differently. One is a blue S.A. that I have spent waaay to much money customizing, the second is a Stainless Steel S.A. that I mostly followed Col. Coopers advice for a good carry gun (good trigger, good sights, reliable).

#3 is the cream of the crop...Colt Series 70 Gold Cup. I truly believe that with the right loads and right shooter it is capable of 1" groups at 25 yards out of the box. Sadly the owner (me) isn't capable of that good of shooting.

I acquired my 1911's back in 1980's when I was getting involved in IPSC. The equipment race at the time quickly outpaced my budget and I never have really cottoned to the 1911. I have considered from time to time to sending my Stainless Steel S.A. off to be hard chromed as I think that will be the near perfect most rust resistant 1911. It needs to have the sights updated before I do so.

As I have three ammo cans full of 45 Auto ammo along with a lot of brass and bullets for reloading I have been giving a lot of thought to buying a more modern 45 semi-auto.

I carry and shoot my 1911's in the colder months. A Glock 26, Glock 19 or Ruger LC9s in the summer.

Here are mine.

Mostly for fun or vehicle carry. Maybe as a sidearm hunting. Do they have rails? If so, attach a light and use for HD. I won't have a HD handgun without a light mounted.

I use my Govt Model SS Colt for my home defense pistol. The large caliber just makes me feel better. I also enjoy fondling it just because it’s awesome!

If the only pistols available on earth were tupperware 9mm's or smaller I'd only own one gun instead of 50.
In fact I do actually only own one plastic gun, because it's convenient, but not interesting in the least to me. If I knew there might be a gun fight and couldn't avoid it I'd carry my DW 10mm 1911 and two or three mags, plus a rifle probably.

Wilson magazine made my 1911 an 8+1, 9 rounds of 45 can't be sneezed at.

If I ever find myself in harm's way I want my 1911 on my hip. One saved my life in 69 and it is capable of doing it again.

I carried one in Viet Nam for many months. Ever since then I have frequently carried one as a concealed firearm depending on what I was doing and where I was going. They're flat and thin enough that they conceal well.
