Along with HP-38, both made in Kansas plant of course. Bunch of other "Winchester" powders on shelf too. Guess Hodgen figured they could trade on the name. All same price $26.95 or thereabouts. Bought 1000 CCI large pistol primers....$32.95! Prices gone up a lot since I bought my last ones! :)

You’re lucky
The only place near me since I moved that sells powder is very expensive.
I miss having a Sportsman’s Warehouse nearby as they were a little on the expensive side but had everything. Here no one but that 9ne store carries powder, primers, etc

Winchester 231/Hodgdon HP38 is made by the St. Marks Powder Co. in St. Marks, FL., as are most of the other ball powders distributed by Hodgdon. Hodgdon doesn't make powders, they just distribute them

Hope this helps.

Fred

Thanks Fred. Who makes the powders they sell? I thought they bought out Winchester several years ago and for long time never saw any 231 anywhere....just HP38. Long as we can find it, doesn't really matter. I still have some Bullseye I haven't used up which for long time was my primary, but then got off on 231, even some Clays which I liked for 45acp.

General Dynamics owns St. Marks which makes most of not all of Hodgdon/Winchester/IMR ball powders. Clays comes from a plant in Canada I think.

Actually, Hodgdon bought the rights to distribute Winchester powders, the name is still owned by Olin. Since the start Hodgdon said they were committed to keeping the Winchester line healthy and relevant. They introduced AutoComp, W244 and W572 under the Winchester name.

Forcibly shortage of Winchester powders I saw had nothing to do with Hodgdon but the powder shortage that but the entire industry. As a note, they did but IMR and have been introducing new handgun and rifle powders under their name too like the Enduron powders. They are smart to keep all 3 companies going as almost independent subsidiaries.

Yes, Hodgdon has always been a packager of powder. In the early days, they would buy surplus powder and repackage it for sale.

Now a days, Hodgdon contracts with various powder makers to manufacture their powders and Hodgdon then packages them for sale.

Since Hodgdon obtained the rights to market Winchester powders, they have admitted that several Hodgdon powders are the same as Winchester powders. HP38 and W231 is one. H110 and W296 is another. There may be one or two others.

But, never assume two powders are the same without reliable information to support that.

There are more.
W540=HS-6 (W540 discontinued)
W571=HS7 (both discontinued)
W760=H414
WAP= Silhouette (Ramshot)

Also add that many of their rifle powders are made in Australia. ADI powders
Also Trail Boss and Clays are made by ADI

Clays is now being produced in Canada. When ADI had their fire several years ago, and was out of production for a period of time, Hodgdon looked for other sources for several of their powders, and Clays was one of them. I haven't found any difference between the ADI made Clays and the Canadian made Clays in shotgun loading.

Another problem with powder being shipped from Australia is the limited amount of powder that can be transported by any one ship. I'm not sure if the limitation is imposed by the shipping companies, or by regulations, but only one 40' shipping container of powder is allowed on any one ship. This was told to me by Chris Hodgdon at the SHOT Show a few years ago. This also applies to powder shipped from European countries, or any other source that relies on water borne shipping. By sourcing powders on the same continent, that restriction doesn't apply, and shipping times are also reduced.

Hope this helps.

My understanding was that ADI may still make powders in Australia, but Hodgdon had so much trouble getting powder (mainly Clays) shipped to the USA that they contracted GD to have it made in Canada. So if you are reading this in North America, then your can probably says Made in Canada. If you are reading this elsewhere it may say Made in Australia.

The 2 versions of Clays are very close, but not identical.

The problem getting powder from ADI was a fire. Their plant burned down so Hodgdon found another source.
