100%. He never explains the financial source for many of his reviews and what he's getting from it. Is he getting free products? He's done more than a few that are just like commercials. Oh look it here.. I got a new brand X press.. watch as I set it up and nothing goes wrong. Maybe he started off buying the products to review, but I believe they send them to him free, and by free they mean in a quid pro quo for any future free stuff.

Did you see his review of the new FA electronic power dispenser? He really glossed that over! If my Chargemaster Lite did some that stuff I would have sent it back. When they get the bugs out of that thing it looks like ti will be a good unit. Yeah, I know he has gone commercial, but I still like watching his stuff. The Big Boss II still looks really good to me, but my old RC1 isn't going to wear out soon.

there was a small you tuber, back when shot show was on, guy is very honest about the stuff he doe on video. this guy had a video of the guy from UR that showed of camra the guy really does not know very much, you see him reading from script and off cam asking questions only a very new reloader would ask.i don't like talking about guys like this but cant stand guys who are not honest. he has not paid for a dang thing. i saw one video where a guy calls UR out for doing a fake give away, the dude made up a fake youtube account.

his most used word is, but that's ok. many time have things not worked right and he just plays it off as normal. i watched he like a comedy show, kinda like the outdoor shows from the 90s of all the guys taking bad shots and messing up. with editing video even a goff can look like a pro, but i see right through the UR videos.

He's one of the lucky few that was able to make a career out of YouTube. "Commercials" is the right word......but at least he shows a little of everything. I watch em once.....so to see how some of the products go together and looking for surprises. I can tell you that when he did the RCBS Pro 2000 years ago, he totally screwed it up. Had three primers feed with no case.....oops. Probably learned from that, that learning the machines a little before the video is smart.

I was probably the Pro 2 K's most positive champion....posted a lot on my press.....but I never was offered any freebies.........Oh! take that back......I broke a shell plate base part, and they replaced it free...........Oh, wait!.......they do that for everyone! :D

Just got through watching it all.......he did a actually did pretty good job.....better than I coulda done! No! Way better than I could have done......However I wouldn't have minded trying.;)

His thoughts on tolerances was interesting.....solid vs. floating alignment. Solid is good if you can guarantee perfection. There's a thread on AR15.com about a guy's new Forster......it's having trouble making .45acp that will feed.....shows some closeups of a not so perfect alignment. Goes to show that even the best, can't always be made perfect. Floating alignment design is smart insurance, IMO.

GW - do you have a link to that thread on AR15, I can't seem to find it.

I like my co-ax, but could never get the universal shellholder to work properly. They sell a conversion that allows you to use standard ones and that's good to go.

Most, if not all of the people who review products Do Not get free products. They place a request with the manufacturer asking for them to send their product for review. When complete they have to send it back unless they want to write a check to keep it. Like I said, most time including guns, presses, scopes, electronic and the like. Consumables like cleaning products and ammo of course are sent without returns if any is left over.

I know someone who does reviews and he never gets free stuff.

I don't understand the "negativity" I think he did an outstanding job. A lot of time and work went into it.
Who cares if he gets "free" stuff. Where else can you find a comprehensive review on 14 press (or any other reviews he does)??
Anyone do a better job? Guess folks can read anecdotal reviews on internet forums and then watch Hitchcock 45 shoot stuff and say Yahoo and babble for 30 minutes and promote Buds, ammo and products

I wish he would have done a ranking based upon his results. I am sure we could all do that ourselves, it would be a good addition to his work. Since these are all samples of one, we don't really know if his results with any given press are typical, but still, it's nice to see almost all the popular presses compared.

I try to do a few videos myself as I find it an easier way to share information with the rest of you folks. Everything I have I bought with my own money. I have a ton of stuff thats crap and I am always honest about it. You have to be careful about these sponsored Vloggers. There are some guys like Garand Thumb who will tell you candidly what his relationship is or isnt with the manufacturer and Ive seen him trash plenty of products that were sent to him for free. Single stage presses are not a complex machine. They either work and build bullets with good concentricity or not.

I don't really care where a product sample comes from. I rely on reviews like this when I'm adding to my toolset. When I search for a product I look for multiple reviews by different sources and listen to all of the findings before making my own decision. Getting me to part with hard earned cash isn't easy.

The same thing goes for things I read about on this forum and I give even heavier weight to this information when making my decisions. The knowledge represented in this forum is nothing less than extraordinary.

He not only did the video but tabulated all his results. What more does he need to do? He posted his findings/facts not his opinion. It gives folks a chance to at least see them all in one place and some measurements/data.To bad Dillion doesn't have a single stage, then there would be no need to review any others. Well except the $900 German one!

but don't dillon have one

Tough crowd

Yup, always has been. Gavin's really between a rock and a hard place. This venture has worked beyond his wildest dreams I'm sure.....and with a little success there are always head winds.;) If I was to give him advice it would be to do as a good American president does.....surround himself with real experience and talent until he becomes real experienced and talented. I think he's progressing nicely that direction. With his large site following, the manufacturers are blowing his sails....from their view, what's not to like with free advertising.....OK.... so throw in a few presses....that's a really cheap advertising budget. Goodonhim. :)

Umm, you seem bitter. I used to wonder about that, then on another forum I saw a guy post a question on a Lee progressive and get dumped on really bad by Dillon fans for owning something other than blue. I am really glad we don't see much of that here and I understand you much better now. I just thought ratings would be nice in the conclusion, that's all.

The problem with ratings from Gavin's point of view is it makes somes happy and somes angry. The happy keep coming for a while until they become one of the angry. He's juggling.....comes with the territory....;) the idea is to keep as many as possible coming. His ratings is what matters to his site. However, sometimes you can read between the lines....

the red highlight.....I think that might be an example ot reading between the lines.... while on a tight rope a mile in the sky....

the stereotypical dillon owners is one reason i don't think i would own one, even if i had the money. i have seen them really bash lee owners, for the money lee work just fine.

Of course popular reviewers get free stuff. Marketing departments always want their product reviewed, and big reviewers are always wanting to keep the ball rolling by reviewing more stuff. That's the only quid pro quo here. If you were the manufacturer, would you just pick out a name of the High Road at random and say "Hey, buddy review this !" Heck no you wouldn't. You'd want someone with an audience.

But Ultimate Reloader isn't the only one milking this scheme. Every hobby magazine you see in the grocery store is doing the exact same thing. Handguns, rifles, motorcycles, hang gliders, cars, gardening, hiking, running, sewing, quilting... if it's a hobby magazine or a hobby web site, then you can bet your last dollar they accept free gifts and loaners to be able to do those reviews. Gosh, even giants like Hickok45 and This Old House receive gifts and loaners, but I will say they're a little better about making the sources clear.

I say let's give the guy some credit. He bought a couple of presses and made some excellent videos. Videos that beat the pants off the typical YouTube "Hey guys watch this!" garbage !! And because of that he collected an audience. It was a lot of work. I bet he has 50,000 hours invested, and even if he got every press and die set FREE, he's still probably spent $10,000 on lighting, cameras and lenses.

You're correct, it wasn't anything any one of us couldn't have done.... if we were smart enough from the start to think of it !! BUT WE WEREN'T !!!

;)

He's not reviewing.. he's making a commercial so he can get more free stuff. If you like to pretend a guy making a commercial is actually reviewing something and not spitting a line of crap go ahead. You wanna prostitute your character for free stuff go ahead. Tell people something is perfect when you know they are gonna have troubles right from the start... just edit out all your failures and for that you can keep getting more free stuff.

Hi...
I enjoy Gavin's reviews and watch them when I am contemplating purchasing reloading equipment.
I don't care if he gets free stuff... I don't care if Hickock45 gets free stuff... I don't care if 76Highboy gets free stuff...doesn't matter to me.
I watch the videos to get an idea if the features on the item match what I am looking to do. I am perfectly capable of wading through the paid commercial and making a judgement using my own admittedly imperfect thought processes.
