Yep, they scare the crap out of me.Came home from hunting last season, Was out on a Sat, woke up Sunday with one embedded in the back of my neck. Dispite clothes soaked in Permethrin . Went to the emergency room right away. Doctor had to use a scalpel to cut it out. Had to take Anti-biotics to include the one for Lyme disease. Doctor told me, I was very wise to rush to the emergency room. There is basically a 24 hr window to prevent the infection and then not always successful. I have a friend of the family. Beautiful woman full of life. Now you would not recognize her. And confined to a wheel chair.
And do not think Tick just go away in cold weather. I have loved the woods since a kid. Never feared Bears, snakes which I have ran into many etc. But ticks scare the crap out of me.

Up the thread PWC mentioned garlic. I never connected the two but I eat a TON of garlic. Ridiculous amounts. So maybe if you combine his statement and mine from earlier, there’s a correlation? I’m no scientist, disclaimer, etc....

You can cuss them or import fireants and say goodbye to species including ticks. I don’t need to keep clear fingernail polish around anymore but I can’t tell you the last time I heard non caged bobwhite quail around here.

I'm afraid Florida has fireants aplenty, but in many areas ticks aplenty as well. Where there are deer there are ticks.

Already pulled three off of me this year from when I've been out cutting brush. One round of doxycycline was enough. I now spray repellent on my boots and trouser legs.

^^^^^^ You beat me to it. My experience exactly. We hardly have any ticks where I live but its only because we are covered up in Fireants.

I got 2 of them during our turkey season. I've been bit so many times its a wonder I never got sick. They were a normal part of life at Ft Campbell. In my opinion, totally unavoidable there.

Just had a 4 week bout of something that left me weak with a fever and joint aches. I just got my Lyme's test back yesterday. It turned out negative so I guess I had something else ... maybe West Nile disease.
I usually get 7-10 tick bites each year. They are everywhere.

The standard Lymes tests are Notoriously Unreliable. If you suspect Lymes you should be screened by an ILAD's doctor. Google is your friend. They can be scarce in many areas. Like mine.

I've been diagnosed with and treated for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever but don't have an ILAD's doctor nearby. It's a day's trip and my insurance won't cover most of the costs. Lousy situation if you have Lyme in most cases.

I soke all my hunting clothes in Permethren.
Got the ratio off YouTube, and hiking forums.
Haven't see a tick on me ever sence I've started using it.

Used Sawyer's until local Academy quit handling it then picked up some 10% permethrin at local feed store and diluted with water (to .5% permethrin, 99.5% inert ingredients) shown on the Sawyer's label. Have been mixing my own ever since. Spray boots and clothing and it lasts several weeks. IIRC Sawyer recommends not re-applying for 2-3 weeks. I never hunt without it and haven't had a tick since learning about it.

Regards,
hps

I have a friend whose a farmer and each year I help him work cattle and he always uses Ivomec liquid on the backs of the cattle to protect them from parasites. Just a small amount of the liquid on the back is all it takes. Ticks just love me and I get them all the time but my friend told me he can only remember having a tick one time in the many years he has been using Ivomec. I told him that he must be getting sloppy using the Ivomec. Apparently the Ivomec works the same on humans as it does on cattle.
