I didn't win but still had a fun day at the range. Too many firsts of my life.

My range had members event today and first prize was a XDM 45.
As usual, I never win anything, no luck, not even for the small accessories prizes. :(

However, here's the good part.
There were reps from Springfield and Vortex offering free try out sessions.
So I got to try few guns that I never shot before in my life, including rifles.

I never shot 1911 pistol so I tried that first.
I didn't realize that it doesn't have any travel.
I was still pulling the trigger thinking of the take up when it went off. Caught me off guard ;).

Then another first in my life, rifles. Also, another first, any gun with a scope.
First rifle I tried was the Springfield 300 blackout with suppressor with Red dot on the scope.
Great shooting gun. Now, it feels like shooting a gun.

Next was Christensen BA TActical 308 bolt action with green laser (or red). Another first, never shot bolt action before.
This one has great kick but felt good.
It was loud. Everyone in the next lanes looked at me when I shot this.
Now I'm spoiled.

Finally, tried 9mm Ruger PC Carbine.
This one takes regular pistol 9mm cartridges.
At 25 yards, I hit inside the target somewhere. Scope helped.

Oh man, I can feel my pocket burning already. :D :D :D

It's so amazing that I was scared to even touch a handgun few months ago.

You most definitely had an awesome day! Much like the proverbial kid in a candy store you had a great time trying out all the new toys!

Now comes the hard part (as many of us can attest to): deciding what you really want and buying what you can actually afford!

Hey it's never too late to start collecting new or used guns and get into shooting! Best advice I can give is to take your time and buy as much quality in a gun that you can afford.

I agree 100%. Next gun you need is a vintage S&W Revolver. If you think what you have tried is fun, wait til you shoot a 50+ year old gun and it outshoots anything new at the range! When you get the opportunity, try an older Smith or Colt Revolver. You won't soon forget the butter smooth action. You will have to have one. Then another and another...……...

Yep, a single action only trigger on a 1911 often has little or no take up if it's a good one, and breaks very cleanly. For this reason I've actually found that new shooters enjoy shooting 1911s quite a bit, because it's easier to hit their target. However, carrying a gun cocked and locked often discourages them.

The trigger on my SAO Sig P220 on the other hand has a lot of take up, but breaks very cleanly also.
