i am not old but remember when they were cheap. the company midland, maes nice little single shot shotguns. there like 100 buck, last year they said they were coming out with rifle barrels this year but have not seen them yet. the henry looks pretty good but not cheap. these single shots should never cost more then a bolt action rifle.

No, because of the price tag. If it weren't for that... they look pretty nice.
there a place me and my friend buy from, they have a bunch of the remington 1867 rolling block rifles. there complete rifles some are welded barrels and missing parts. my buddy got one this week for $180 in 8x58r welded it's in nice shape tho. he is cleaning out the chamber now.

Did they make the CVA Hunter rifle in .357 Mag? I have one in .44 Magnum and it's a tack driver.

I touched off a round of 3" buck from one those Midlands in 12ga. That was a little much in a 4.5lb shotgun (or something like that). Should be a slick little singleshot in something not brutal like that.
They say the barrels will be interchangeable, I may scratch the itch for one of those sooner rather than later......

If they do turn out some .357s I may send you my barrel to ream out. I'd much prefer a Max to the regular .357....tho I guess I'd actually probably go .44 since I've got my .44 rugers.
ya no problem. i need to check my dads and are friend brendon reamers and make a list. he just used his 8mm/348AI reamer today on a rolling block. so some odd ball stuff to.

Henry is a little more than I want to pay for a single shot but they do look real nice. If the barrels were interchangeable and reasonably priced I'd take the plunge.
If they could swap barrels I'd already own one. Almost bought the 44, but I really want a few of them and handi rifles are still a bit cheaper.. The world keeps turning and stuff keeps getting more expensive.... Dang, I sound like an old guy!

FWIW, I've got three barrels for one of my Handirifles and now wish I'd just bought three whole guns instead. Same with my spare Encore barrels -- I'll probably buy a few more actions to make up complete rifles and handguns for each.

That was my experience with Encores before I decided to abandon the platform (for better or worse).

Speaking of Encores, Mike Bellm did a trigger job on one of mine and it was outstanding. Now I see that he is offering to rechamber the .357 Henry to .357 Maximum. I am giving serious thought to sending my Henry to him.

Not quite the same, but I recently acquired a Chiappa subcaliber adapter in 9mm and put it in my 'do-all' 12 gauge. Decent groups, and Short Lane offers a .357 version. If you must have a longer barrel, MCA in Alaska offers a drop in, but I've heard it takes awhile to get it.
I agree, there needs to be a good, inexpensive single-shot rifle line out there.

The Henry 357 SS is the top gun on my list of new guns to get. I have been a fan of Rook & Rabbit rifles for many years. There is a poster on here who lives in Houston (351 winchester?) who owns several real R&R rifles. He has posted pictures of them before. I drooled. But I really like the idea of a quick change out of load just by opening the barrel.

I had a Marlin in 32 mag and loved shooting sub loads out of it. I would load a 76gr bullet with just over 1gr of Bullseye and it was as quiet as a CB22 but still got 960fps when I checked. I want to do the same thing with a 357 single shot with 22" barrel. Here is an insert you can get for a 20ga to convert to a 357. You can get up to a 20" insert.

Jump to the 5:30 mark and this is what I would like to do.

The 357 can be a very versatile gun with light loads to full power loads I would use on deer sized game. Ross Seyfried wrote about using a .360 bore single shot muzzle loader going 1600fps to kill cow elk while using a lead bullet. Do I recommend a 357 for that? No, but it just goes to show what a well placed round will do.

I did have an H&R 357 with a 16" barrel and open sights. I let a bud talk me out of it. He loves it and has a huge scope on it and uses it to shoot the thumb tacks out of the target board at 25 yards. Its a heavy brute but as strong as hell with its massive breach. If it had of come with a 22" barrel and open sights I would have never sold it to him.

As for the cost? All I can say is just suck it up. It is what it is and only only have to cry once. Then you can laugh for years.
