Suppose the end of the world came as we know it, and you only had one weapon. The Midland Back or similar single barrel shot gun with a 18" barrel.k in 12 ga.
You were given two 8" inserts, the 22. cal and the 9mm. And the choice of picking one more insert. Which would you choose.

Please this is not to compare other shotguns, pistols etc.
Do not consider reloading as a option
This is not to rate the gun.
Just your caliber pick.

By the way here is a target I shot when new at 25 yards with a 9mm insert. The shotgun only has a bead site and a small grove in the rear.
I have no doubt that 90% could do better than I could with this setup. But will give you a idea of what it is capable of when New and not much practice.
*These are rifled inserts

I’m pretty sure SHTF and similar threads/posts are a rules violation, I’m betting this is history very soon.

In the event it’s not, I see no reason to have a one size fits all approach. A multi tool is good to have if it’s your only option. But I’d rather have individual tool. Likewise, I’d rather have a pistol, rifle and shotgun.

Say what? That seems like total nonsense. Can you give some kind of reference or example. I am just trying to find out what caliber. If you do not want to vote fine. But there is no need for this. If a moderator thinks I posted some violation then Please remove.
And I specifically asked for no mention or referring other pistols or fire arms.
Just a caliber preference.

I searched around for other insert companies and they had other calibers like 357 etc. But all were smooth bore. I do not have any experience in that area.

And I might have to do another poll where availability is NOT a issue. Just the caliber of your choice at pistol distances to 25 -50 yds. And remember the insert is a 8" rifled barrel.

You started with a suppose the end of the world came.

Saying I’m pretty sure it was against the rules isn’t nonsense. I also said I could be mistaken.

As for calibers. I’m not an expert but what you need depends on the objective.

There are tons of end of civilization as we know it threads on lots of forums that suggest what to have.

And I don’t think it’s nonsense to say I’d rather have three dedicated weapons.

If you’re looking just for what you have that’s a different question. And different answers. Just because I disagree with your approach doesn’t mean mine is nonsense.

How about just picking a caliber of choice?

Of those three.... I would choose .45 colt.
My choice for survival gun would be .22lr.
In some situations, being quiet is as important as being powerful .

Having a 12ga would handle many of the Power needs for close range. Of course the 22.cal would be a must. The 9mm has plenty of availability. And of course you can shoot slugs. I think you might be right, the 45 Colt might be the way to go. I want to spend more time shooting slugs with this shotgun and most likely will buy a The Acp insert just to get a feel of shooting 45 and then move to the Colt for regular times of just carry.
One thing I do like about this firearm is the single barrel shooting A box of 9mm for instance last a LONG time and just fun to shoot.

If that is the only BACKPACKING gun I have with me on an extended foraging hike through of something like the PCT or Appalachian trail, I could easily see wanting to carry the lightest option available and grab ammo along the way when a town hardware store is encountered. In that case, and of the available options listed, I picked 45 acp due to availability. I'd rather have a 44 MAG insert, but finding 45 acp is easy.

I dunno. Ignoring the verboten premise, choosing an insert set makes sense for a gun like this. Might make for a handy tool set for a truck gun or at the cabin.

If I had a 12 gauge and a .22 and 9mm insert, I think I would lean toward .45 colt. The 12 would handle heavy lifting, the .22 light foraging, the 9mm has a bit more punch than the .22. The .45 colt can reach out to take bigger game.

Do you have another firearm in any of those calibers, or plan on obtaining one? Personally, I really hate having to buy and stockpile a new caliber.

Although it is outside the stated purpose, is cost of any significance? .45 acp is the cheapest of the three by a significant margin in addition to having the widest availability.

All three are otherwise ballistically similar out of an 8" barrel. Since handloading is off the table, .45 colt doesn't offer anything extra unless you plan on buying expensive specialty rounds.

Also, is the .22 insert really a done deal? An actual .22 rifle isn't far off in price and would be better for the stated purpose.

In the situation described, it probably comes down to availability of ammunition, so I voted .45 ACP. If looking at that last list, .30-30 looks interesting. (So interesting, they put it on the list twice.)

As far as SHTF threads, there used to be a sticky around here mentioning that they're not allowed. Perhaps the moderators have lightened up on that, since I can't find it now. They tend to get into the weeds and anything that gets too far afield will get shut down anyway.

This thread about a single barrel backpack shotgun, does not have to be about SHTF. Again, It is a back pack shotgun. And one that you cab bring a simple insert along. There is no other discussion about any other firearms. Just a shotgun and insert.I should have edited it to just ask the question of what insert would you choose. And t the versatility of the little light weight shotgun.

Considering there are very few .44 Special ammo available, and .45ACP is everywhere I picked .45ACP. The .45 Colt ammo would be a bit more power, but still not as available as the ACP.
This is pretty much the last word on the subject right here. You killed this discussion in the first post. Well done, sir.

Like many others here I would go with a .45 ACP barrel insert based primarily on the availability of ammo.

I picked .45 ACP for the same reason as others, price and availability. Personally I own a Chiappa in 9mm and was quite surprised at how well it shot, even given just having a brass bead and slight groove for a rear sight. For example:

Granted, range was kind of close, but still pretty good considering the minimal sight picture.

Subcaliber adapters are great in giving one an additional option when going afield. I got mine solely to increase trigger time with my shotgun without tearing up my already damaged shoulder anymore. Snap shooting practice is a lot nicer now.

I voted for .45 acp since it is available everywhere.

I also have a question.......where would you find a shotgun such at this? Also, does it need to be just a single shot shotgun in order to use the inserts?

Joe

You can use the longer adapters (5"-8") in SxS and O/U guns, while Shortlane has 3" versions that can fit in pumps and autos. Beware if using those, they're hard on extractors and ejectors owing to their greater weight.
