Alright so everyone knows that I have cancer. I’m gonna get it cut out next week with chemo following. So I was on my way to the store to get some of the protein powder and drinks that will be my diet for a year, when the gun store I go by every single day started calling my name. The parking lot was empty, so I felt like it would be a sin not to go in and meander the used case in peace. Wouldn’t ya know it never works out that way. Now I’m in a gun store, I’ve got my eye on a really good deal, when in walks this bald guy with jailhouse tatts all over. He starts acting up. The employees tell him to leave. The usual banter ensues. My day would have been ruined had I not found another 9mm Ruger for $200.
Now I’m ready for anything, even protein drinks. Does this happen to anyone else?

Hope you beat it. Your THR buddies are pulling for you so keep us posted!

Absolutely, bed rest for 6 weeks followed with chemo is gonna ROCK! :barf:

 At least I’ll have time to look for the elusive Ruger I want.

P series or one of the newer american versions. I'm a fan of the P series guns.

As far as protein goes ive been a powerlifter for 20+ years. People nowadays don't know how lucky they are to have palatable (even cheap AND palatable) protein. In the 90s it was rough stuff. Lol. If you need opinions or guidance on the wonderful world of Current protein powder choices shoot me a Pm. And good luck

Hi...
Been there done that...
Have the surgical scars, radiation and chemotherapy treatments to prove it.
Had cancer three times and pronounced terminal for two separate cancers. Had a feeding tube for months back in 2012.
You can beat this...I am living proof.
Keep a cheerful attitude and do not give up.
Allow no time for negativity. Try to envision your body's defenses destroying the tumors.
Fight like your life depends on it... because it does.
Never give up!

I had Colon cancer a year or so ago. They got it all (lost 2/3 of colon) and I avoided Chemo. Did though survive on Ensure (high protein) until all was healed and it stayed gone. There are several substitutes and they are all good. (Costco is best place to buy)

Good luck to you and keep a positive attitude.

Dean

Congrats on the Ruger and I'm sorry to hear about your health issues. Just like all Rugers are not the same, all protein drinks are not the same. The biggest issue when looking at protein is probably the mixed vs. powder question. The short answer is that the stuff that is already mixed for you is 1) very expensive and 2) not as healthy for you as some of the powders. The next issue with protein powders is the protein vs. suger vs. other stuff such as carbs. Because you will be working to recover from surgery, you should be looking at protein powders with high concentrations of protein and low amounts of suger and carbs. You want to build healthy tissue not gain weight! The next step is to look over the main types of protein powders -- whey, whey isolate, whey casein and other. Whey digests the easiest and casein takes longer to digest but generally makes more of the protein available for healthy tissue growth. Also look at the brand name. Some are made in places that aren't exactly known for high quality products. The widest selection and best quality I've found is at GNC. If you become a "member" and buy two at once, the price is a little better. Now, if you go the powder route, you should get a "shaker tumbler" to make mixing it up convenient, but... since you're going to be doing this for a while you might want to think about a good quality dedicated blender. If you mix the powder with water and ice in a good blender, it can come out almost like a thin milk shake... mighty tasty! Please keep us posted on your recovery and know that our thoughts are with you.

Wish you luck man, and yes. The last time I went to the LGS on a whim I found a Sig P938 Legion and couldn’t let it go.

Never good used deals though. Always full retail.

Great deal on the Ruger.
Be careful with the protein drinks. Too much and you can damage your kidneys.
Here is something that will help you keep on the weight. Mix these in a blender and drink it three times a day.
Ensure plus, banana and 6 oatmeal cookies = right at 700 calories with 19 grams of protein.

Save the bottles and use them for targets.

“Double-hit” lymphoma here; chemo, radiation and a stem cell transplant - given one year in 2012 seven years ago. “The hell with the cancer.....!” (Walter White) - you will get past “good deals” once you accept your philosophical mortality - you will then be passé about money or anything material - you will buy what you want but become wanton of nothing. Cancer releases you - cancer is counterintuitive - it is actually a gift of freedom. Enjoy your Ruger, buy another if you wish and then another - it is just another thing. Ps, the fear goes away over time and is replaced by awareness - you can have real fun now.

Here's hoping, and praying, that you beat this thing resoundingly and are back enjoying great health once again!

Oh, and nice score on the the Ruger!

It seems that no one else hears the sirens song from the LGS that I do. How odd...I find it very hard to believe that I’m the only one who goes out for groceries but comes back with new to me metal.

Appreciate all the good advice. I never knew that there where 8 different health food stores in this sleepy little town. Conversely there are 10 gun stores.

Sounds like a good balance there of health food stores and gun shops!

Enjoy your varied selection!

No no. I went for groceries last week and came home with an HK so your not entirely alone. Sadly the weeks groceries costed half as much as the HK. It rediculous that 200 dollars in groceries can fit in a car with no back seat and a trunk that is smaller than most glove boxes from the 70s. The pawn shop and Harris Teeter share a parking lot. And If my wife shops at walmart I always end up with un-needed powder, primers or targets.

Health food stores usually have high markups. Sam's club, allstarhealth, and bodybuilding.com are cheaper. I buy from amazon too occasionally.
As far as the macronutrient ratios go, carbs and fat will be dependent on your individual needs. Some powders have an asinine amount of cholesterol to note as well if that's an issue. Some brands are known to add nitrogen to spike the actual protein total too but the last few years that was cracked down on. Most now list the protein amount prior to adding the other nitrogens. (Google protein spiking) If your trying to bulk back up or maintain weight you use different protein than if trying to cut weight. Some are faster proteins for different times of day too.
Gym meatheads have an unfair reputation for being dumb. It takes us a lot more intelligence to get our progress than most can imagine.

I've never seen anyone asked to leave a gun shop. I used to be a regular customer at a local pawn/gun shop where I considered the owner a friend. It was a one person operation, if he had business elsewhere he just locked the door and hung a sign saying when he'd be back. One day I walked in and shortly after I did the only other customer left. The owner said that he was glad I came in when I did. He said he had a bad feeling about the other customer and thought he was going to attempt a robbery. When I came in the door the other guy abruptly left.

Done that with guns a few times. Bought new truck that way in 1985.

Good luck with the cancer treatment. Things have gotten much better. Both of my parents beat cancer, dad with colon and skin cancer, mom with breast cancer. They are both gone now, but lived into their late 80's. But it wasn't cancer that got them.

Sorry to hear about your upcoming battle with the Big C.

My Mother had breast cancer and was only given 6 months to live. She not only survived the surgery and chemo but went on to live another 25 years. We both believe it was her determination and faith in a higher power that caused her to beat the odds. Doctors aren't as smart as they would have us to believe they are.

I agreed with Gunny's recommendation for Ensure, banana and oatmeal cookies. The best thing protein powders do is making your wallet lighter fooling you into thinking you are getting stronger.

Gun Store P.T. is recommended but Gun Shows are the best. At a Gun Show you can handled as many guns as you want and let the positive+ ions transfer from the guns to your body. The more positive+++ ions the better.

Yeah, I have trouble passing by gun stores. And sometimes I find something!

Good Luck with your surgery and treatments. Attitude is important, and yours is good. Try to keep it up. There will be some difficult times ahead. We will think about you and Pray for you. Hang in there and please stay in touch.
