Refinished Rolling-Block

I decided it was time to refinish the stocks of my home-spun rolling block .22 carbine. I stripped them, hand sanded them to 3000-grit, then finished them with Minwax. It came out great- I'm really happy. This is Quilted Maple, BTW, with a little Minwax Cherry-wood stain for color.

That maple is gorgeous! Maple is a most unpopular wood for gunstocks, so it's neat to see, and especially when it's done well. The brass is fun too.

Looks like maple stocks are starting to show up on higher end factory guns. Our local stock guy spoke of the difficulty working with quilted maple. OP has done a great job on his project.

Sweet work. I do like Maple. Lots of maple in the great northeast. Reminds me of growing up and trying to split wood that looks like that. Quite a job. I could only imagine what making a rifle stock out of it would entail.

Which specific Minwax product are you using for your finish coats? I used to be partial to Tru Oil, but we can't have nasty things using VOC solvents here in the People's Republic of California and I'm looking for alternatives.

The label just says 'clear finish.'

Don't tell me you actually want to shoot this work of art? I would be scared to death I might get a ding in the stock or a scratch in the finish.

It's a rifle- it's made to be shot. If it picks up a ding or two along the way, well, that's just character!
