What would it be?

I am considering another gun, and I'd like the unicorn gun that is and does everything, something as light and cheap as a .22 revolver with the range and capacity of a belt fed 338LM (I know, I know, but hey there's an entire thread here on fictional guns)
I don't really want to bias the thread, but I'm leaning toward a LA rifle chambered in .2XX

Now, I know the unicorn doesn't exist, and that you'd ideally have the right tool for the job, and your carry gun isn't your hunting rifle.
BUT if you had ONE and only one gun... Say, you were showering in a gun shop and an earthquake, tsunami, volcano, (insert your favourite SHTF scenario) and you had time to grab pants and ONE gun
What would it be?

For most of the US I think a 4'' 357 magnum revolver would be the most versatile handgun, and a 12 gauge pump shotgun would win for long guns, especially if a second barrel was allowed.

I'd probably choose the shotgun since I could continue to hunt both large and small game, defend my home, and shoot trap. It's hard to beat something that shoots birdshot, buckshot, and slugs.

If both were allowed I think I could definitely get by with those two.

Only one: 12 gauge shotgun.

You can hunt anything from doves to Grizzlies, perform home defense and it is easily portable in a vehicle. If things go Mad Max then you can easily sling it and it will function in any weather condition. Modern slugs allows an effective range of 100 yards. Most combat is well below this.

Ammo for everything. Buck shot, dove loads, pheasants, slugs, sabot slugs, flares, flame thrower, bolos, flechettes, door breach, incendiary, whistles, rock salt, rubber balls, pepper, Koosh balls, party popper confetti... you name it.

Then there are the sub-calibre adapters allowing you to fire just about any rifle/handgun ammo out there.

Someone out there is probably working on a infrared guided 12 ga anti-drone load.

XDm 4.5" in 10mm. Enough knock down power to take a deer with a well placed shot... so I can feed my family... but still concealable. Sure, it is not a long range battle rifle... but 15 rounds of 10mm gives me a lot of flexibility and there is a lot to be said for having a gun when people do not know you have a gun. At the very least it is a gun to get the battle rifle. Anything larger, like an AR pistol, and you loose concealability.

If I could only have 1 gun it would be a XDm 4.5" in 10mm... and no, I do not own one currently. I love my XD mod 2 3.3" in .45acp though... it is universal enough and nicely compliments my several semi auto rifles, long range target rifles, full sized hand guns and subcompact handguns. If I had to grab one bug out gun from the safe... or night stand... it would be my XD mod 2 3.3" in 45acp.

"One gun" would be a 12-gauge pump action shotgun, preferably with the following barrels, in order of priority:
28-inch vent rib with removable chokes
24-inch rifled slug with cantilever scope mount
18-inch cylinder with a front bead

Usable for small game, big game, home defense. Jack-of-all trades.

Add one handgun: 4-inch revolver in .357 magnum.

I might have a different answer every time this is asked.

Probably a Glock 20.

Maybe a G19.

A P210 or Hi-Power is also a possibility - if you can only have one, why not one of the best ones?

What I wouldn't choose for a one gun scenario is a long gun.

I was about to say cheap 12 gauge pump with a lot of barrels, but your answer is just better. One caveat, if I lived in the city and hunting weren't an option, and the only use I had for a gun was self-defense, sometimes out in public where a drilling slung over the shoulder might cause comment I couldn't afford, I'd go with a 1911 .45 with lots of spare magazines.

As it is, I'd be happier if every time I stepped into a restaurant in a city, or anyplace else, if I could have a shotgun in reach. The world is just a better place with a shotgun in reach, but it would upset too many people. I could just see every time I sat down to a plate of spaghetti being interrupted by other patrons first and finally a policeman asking me why I had the shotgun.

They'd never understand, "Because it makes me happy."

This is nice. "I always wanted me a fifty." Have you ever seen the movie Jerimiah Johnson? Jerimiah wanted a Hawken fifty, but he had to leave St. Louis without one. He finally found Hatchet Jack, frozen to death, his last act, a note attached to his body. "I will my Hawken fifty to whosoever may find it, and pray God he be a . . .
Out of common decency, whenever you carry this big fifty, you ought to have a note in your pocket willing it to whosoever may find it after it's no longer of use to you.

I like in the movie when he got the 32 or 36, can't remember the. He could not hit/ kill anything. The when he got the 50, the Montague of him killing with it was funny to me.
