Gunny made me do it. It’s all his fault. It started with his help in refinishing my CMP M1 stock last year.
My gunsmith tells me “there is no pill you can take to cure this mental problem.”
Then came the upgrading of the wallpaper in my computer room to Tiger Stripe Camo. Looks fine, but sometimes I cant find my keyboard or the door to the bathroom.
My AR build vise blocks and torque wrench are due to be delivered soon and the 7.62x39 AR Kit will be here shortly also.
I still have my old Sony camera so I can post pictures here of my progress in assembling my new toy.
Never before in the history of shooting can there be a more misleading statement than “It’s only money” coming from the Gunny. Do you trust him? :)

Objections from my wife can usually be quelled by letting her buy a new pair of shoes

lionking made me do it. It's all his fault. He started a rimfire competition and I realized I'd sold my competition worthy 22's. Made me sick. I Immediately went to my lgs to see if they had anything. 20190506_145824.jpg Came home with an awesome Ruger MkII. This site can be hard on a guys wallet.

I own that very same pistol. Very accurate.

yeah I had one AR for years, I bought it back around 2007ish, and this was the only one I had up until about a year and a half ago. Then I started building them, I now have 8 full AR rifles and a few uppers. Worst thing you can do for your wallet is signing up for all of the email sales from sites like bear creek, delta team tactical, etc. You will find a reason to build another one soon. Good luck resisting.

Come on , you can't blame me for everything. A lot, but not everything.
There are a lot of great deals this weekend with all the Marmoreal Day sales. Don't hold back, it's only money.
I just placed an order for an Aero Precision M4E1 PEW stripped lower.

I'm lucky that I don't have to spend money on shoes so that I can buy toys. ;)

Nothing seems to work out as planned. Par for the course? My FFL received the stripped lower yesterday. I told him I would not need it for a few days as the tools and Kit would be a few days arriving. WRONG!

Here is two separate shipments of tools and Kit on the same day… Today..

Now I have to bother my friend FFL tonight.! :) He will understand my mental problem and meet me any time.
I have two new sets of pin punches and roll pin punches and I have had this hammer, to drive them with, for some time. I have a bigger one if necessary, but feel oil and grease will diminish my need for driving power.
Luckily my kit, has a fully assembled upper so the lower should be a piece of cake. Now all I need is a 7.62x39 magazine that fits a standard AR lower. Maybe I can take a 5.56 mag and bend it to suit my needs???(with the hammer)
The only thing that daunts me is the "BAG-O-PARTS" that came with the Kit.
How in the heck can I identify the pins and springs that go wherever??? All the pins can't be the same size or diameter. Groan
Gunny- THIS is your fault!!!!

Welcome to the club.
For the record I'm up to an even dozen. Now it's like shoes.
When she asks if the one I'm working on is new, I say nah I've had this one a while just swapping parts again.

WARNING!! That hammer is too big. There is nothing on an AR that will need that much striking force.
The only parts that are the same size are the detents and detent springs, there’s two of each.
These pics should help.

The only two springs that sometimes get mixed up are the bolt catch spring and the disconnector spring. But they are easy to tell apart. The disconnector spring is just a little wider on one end.
This is how your hammer and trigger springs should look when installed.

Thank you Gunny for the pictorial parts breakdown. It looks to me like the Trigger and Hammer pins are one and the same. Now I plan to lay out the parts on a semi sticky paper with your pictorial guide alongside during construction.

The hammer was just my way of being facetious. :) My soft nose hammer is probably too big, but I will use it wisely as I plan to do with my power hacksaw if the hammer fails.

The upper vise block will probably be used in the future as my physician has diagnosed me with AROMANIA and there is no cure. Thank the powers that be for guiding me to a fully assembled upper. I did not want to buy the gauges for it anyway. But the future looms before me.

I’m a little scared to pin the trigger closure as all I have are wooden /homemade blocks to back up the ears. Wish me luck with the hammer! J

be careful when installing the roll pin for the bolt catch, it sets close to the receiver and this process can lead you to a scratched up finish if you're not careful. This and the front detent for the take down pin will be your biggest obstacle. Be prepared for that little detent sailing across the room at what seems like mach 4, I suggest installing this in a place where it can be contained and easily found, ask me how I know.

I bought an extra detent and spring for my AR build and ended up needing both of them - the detent pin slipped loose, hit warp speed and left this dimension, and I boogered the spring trying to hold everything down with a flat blade screwdriver.

The spare parts cost like $3 and saved me a couple days of waiting to continue my build. For a first timer, I would definitely recommend ordering them.

Put strips of electrical tape down the sides to help prevent this.

Install the pin while assembling inside a gallon ZipLoc bag.

As my best friend has "dang that entropy" as his sig line on The Russian Mosin Nagant Forum, (for me getting him back into milsurps-his Mosin collection is even bigger than Gunny's) so I can also say' Dang that Gunny!' I am still adding parts as I can for my next build........

Just one? Such a hassle going through the checkout process for just one lower. :D

I was ahead of the pack with the duct tape to prevent scratching. I had the universal clevis pin and had trouble with it. The business end is slightly tapered so... whammo.. detent pin in orbit. I was a boy scout and had an entire lower pin and spring kit just in case among other goodies. Second try was a piece of cake.

The trigger guard was the most difficult as the roll pin was about 2 inches bigger in diameter than the holes in the ears. Tapping with a small hammer was no good. Wound up pressing the pin in.
Don't Don't Don't install the safety selector before the trigger group. I hadda' back up on that step.

Curses I can't find my torque wrenches! I'll have to borrow from my neighbor. Once I get the buffer tube nailed down it will be what I call done! Are you sure the receiver can take the 40 pounds torque when mounted in the vise block?
Now where can I find a 7.62x39 magazine for the thing?
