22 Savage Hi-Power Loads?

I just started reloading and it was for this round. I found a load on-line of 25gr of H4895 over a 70gr sp. Out of my rifle, I get an average of 2633fps.

Does anyone here have experience with this cartridge? I don't want to invest a lot in different powders as I will not be reloading many cartridges ( this round and .357 ). What I would like is some proven basic go to loads for a max/near max with a 70gr sp, .22 Hornet power with a 50gr sp & a low power plinker or small game 40-45gr hard cast ( if I can find one at .229 ) if not a hard cast 65gr hard cast ( I can purchase those ).

Very cool rifle. I don’t know anything about the round but should be a fun plinker
 
it's a nice cartridge, don't under estimate it. i read they did a survey back in the 30s or 40s, out west somewhere. off what rounds the elk hunters used. there were 5 or 10 % using the 22hp. to kill elk.

What is your source for the correct sized boolits. I have one written down at home, don't have it handy....if there are more I would love to know.

It does not like the "normal" 22 flavor....IIRC it wants them a tick fatter.

While that might very well be true, I wouldn't put much faith in the cartridge as an elk killer. My grandpa was a great shot, and fed his family many a meal of venison. That said, he upgraded to a 721 in .270 for his deer hunting needs, finding that the .22 hi-power AKA5.6×52mmR was a notorious wounder. I know such stories are "heresay" by my grandpa was a modest man, and one who hated to see anything suffer. If he told me it wounded as many as it killed, I tend to believe what I was told. Looking at the ballistics, coupled with the bullets available at the time, I too would be hesitant to recommend it for deer-sized game, and this coming from someone who has no issue using the .223 for deer.
 
I have a combination gun, 12 ga./22 HP and I also do NOT consider it anything I would use for elk, in fact I wouldn't use it for my deer rifle either, even though "of course" it will kill a deer.

Just because something will kill a deer, it doesn't make it a good deer cartridge!

I haven't fired my 22 HP in many years, even though I swage my own HP bullets and reload for it...

I have read those old stories....all of the older, what I call fast movers got this same treatment. I think it was trendy back then....get an itty bitty boolet going super duper fast and then say.....see, you can use this for anything.

I have a deep fascination on the early fast movers....22hp and 220 swift being two of the most popular.....I am not sure why, but I just fine them cool.

LIke a dolt I missed out on a nice 99 in 22hp a week or so ago....gotta keep looking.

A little like the 6.5 for carcano.....as far as I know Hornady is the only one that make the right size and profile.....carcano never got a pointy bullet....always round nose.
