Gunny Inspired Virgin AR Build Happening

Looks like a smudge in the rcvr. by the trigger pin hole, but that is just oil. The only place I got a blemish is by the trigger guard pin hole.
I found my torque wrenches. I had to convert to inch pounds (ft. pds.x12)= 480 inch pounds and the receiver did not twist wile a licorish candy. Whew.

Now all I need is a cheap red dot and a magazine that will feed a few 7.62x39's. BTW- the buffer weighs about 2.9 ounces and rattles when I shake it. (normal????)
Can the entire rifle be submerged in boiling water without ruining something?

Arfcom Lower? Is that a PSA "standard" 7.62x39 upper?

The buffer is fine. The rattle is just the weights , moving a little.
The magazines that Maxxhavoc listed are good and the Company, JSE Surplus, is a great company to deal with.

Cheap red dot either Vortex SPARC AR or Bushnell TRS25. Mags get C Products 20s. Buffer rattle is normal.

Just one? Such a hassle going through the checkout process for just one lower. :D
But I also ordered over a hundred dollars worth of other parts.:) Not sure if I needed all of them, but they were on sale.
I still have 5 or 6 lowers in my parts here at the house that I haven’t used yet.

As my best friend has "dang that entropy" as his sig line on The Russian Mosin Nagant Forum, (for me getting him back into milsurps-his Mosin collection is even bigger than Gunny's) so I can also say' Dang that Gunny!' I am still adding parts as I can for my next build........
Are you sure that he has more Mosins then me? I have over fifty of them.

I think I have whatever bug Gunny has. I built my AR out of a stripped lower and a rifle kit a couple years ago. The rifle upper came with the standard round A2 handguards. I replaced those with a MOE M-Lok handguard, so now I have a handguard set just floating around. The bug is whispering what project AR gun can I build with those handguards? You already have them, might as well use them. I also have a spare charging handle, that could be another AR project.

Ya-know, I can probably put together another one in a coupla' hours of my spare time. After all these vise blocks and wrenches are going to go to pot just sitting there, WHAT am I saying??? Gunny, I'm gonna buy me a "Marine Voo-Doo" doll and put it in a box with a Barbie Doll! Maybe that will change your mind about the importance of what comes first.......women or guns! :) Black magic to the rescue!

No need to worry the women are just a phone call away.

Groan, I have the feeling this gonna' cost me plenty to fix.
I just got back from the range with a report as to what happened with my new AR 7.62x39. NOTHING.... the gun would not go off. Very weak firing pin indentation makes this the safest gun on the planet!

Two of these were hit twice. Time for me to hire a Chinese witch doctor to bless the gun. This ought not happen to a new build!

This ammo works fine with my SKS. I have a partial case of old corrosive stuff, but I did not bring it to the range with me.
First thoughts are to get a heavy firing pin.
Hey Gunny! do you have a 7.62x39 AR in your collection??? Do you have this trouble?

The ammo you have has hard primers. But most likely you have your hammer spring installed backwards .

I had some pretty good pictures and instructions from an old Marine on that build Gunny. I was hoping you were right, and bear in mind there might be other mistakes in there somewhere, but I was very careful.
MVC-007X.JPG
The left is my AR and the right is my ARAK (7.62). The 7.62 hammer spring in the picture looks slightly thicker than the one in the 5.56.
A big heavy firing pin may be the answer.

That there on the left is good to go. That there on the right is upside down. The “legs” of the hammer spring rest in the grooves of the trigger pin to keep the pin from walking and of course to preload the hammer.

Pardon the lint and grease but the contrasting spring color should help. Just slip it off the ears and rotate it 180 degrees till the legs point North. Then, when setting it into the receiver let the legs touch first where the arrows indicate (pic 3) and make sure they coil under pointing South.

Ya know guys, I looked at my own pictures and saw nothing wrong even when you pointed it out to me. I'm giving myself half a dozen Three Stooges slaps to the face, and two eye pokes, now and will do 25 push ups for this malfunction. Back to the drawing boards for this
beginner.

How does it look now?
I wrestled with the spring for a few minutes and think it is now installed the right way. See picture above. That pin is no fun to insert.
Maybe I'm getting too old to assemble these kits. Eyes are bad for sure so I need optics to shoot. Alzheimers???
I tested the safety as before this debacle and again after this spring problem. Trigger resets fine if the hammer is held, and safety works..
Looks like another trip to the range for this tyro!

I have gone to the U-Tube and found that I've made all the mistakes that noo-bee's make and also that I am not the first to see trouble on the horizon in firing my old Vietnam era 7.62 ammo. The hard primers, it is said, are to be resolved with an "enhanced firing pin" and/or a seriously heavy Wolf brand hammer spring. I ordered same just to be on the safe side. I quote from you Gunny.... "It's Only Money"
The completed build did not look like a Homer Simpson Bar-B-Que grill on the outside, but the inside was another story as evidenced by my pictures.
Skyler was also a help here and stands a fine second to Gunny in his know how- Thanks for the pictures!

This is all your fault...............Gunny :)

Hey did you see the stripped lowers are back at $29.......... I better get one soon.

I stopped in at my LGS on the way home today to see if my new lower arrived. No luck. About 20 minutes after I got home the shop called to let me know that my lower had just arrived. I told them that I would pick it up tomorrow.

I can barely find the Shoe Isle at Foot Locker but I have faithfully followed the Gunny’s builds with the anticipation of a kid at Christmas and every once in awhile I think back to how he explained it in a post. I also have an unholy number of screenshots of his menagerie which has inspired me as well.

I grease the fcg because I’m lazy when it comes to AR maintenance. Grease, and store, shoot it, flush with lighter fluid, re-grease. It does indeed attract every vestige of dust and cat hair though so maybe it’s time I get with the program and CLP it.

Just got back from the range. I brought 20 rounds of that Norinco 91' dated non corrosive and 20 rounds of that Vietnam era corrosive dated 66' Can you believe every one of the 40 rounds fired just fine with the FCG as sold,

MVC-010X.JPG
The older stuff is harder to crack as you can see the indentations in the photo.
Unfortunately the the gun shoots way low due to the iron sight I had on hand is the wrong height for this front sight. That will be fixed when I get a new scope for the thing. "It's only money!" (Yeah sure Gunny)
It took the better part of an hour to clean the gun using hot soapy water, brake cleaner, WD39, Hoppes, compressed air, and MPro-7 . The bore finally came clean after 20 passes with bronze brush with T-Shirt swabs.
I inventoried my SKS VN era ammo. About 45-50 pounds and about 300 rounds of the Norinco non corrosive stuff. I wouldn't trust anything made in China as being non-corrosive no matter what it says on the box. Next time out I'm gonna blast away a lot of old ammo.
Thank you Gunny and You too Skyler and all the other AR experts that followed my introduction to AR building.
With my spare parts I can easily complete a lower minus a buffer tube. Hmmmm only money?
