Savage Axis 300 BLK

The Axis is a one length action for all cartridges.

That and a few other things, kinda hurt it.

Factory stock pretty much sucks.

My .243 shot VERY well after a few minor tweaks.
I still dumped it and went back to Rem 700 ADL synth.

Lots do - i’ve built four Savage 10 actions into 300AAC rifles. In fact, I gave one of them to my oldest stepson as a HS graduation present on Friday.

X-Caliber, Shilen, and McGowen are the folk that I use most frequently for Savage pre-fits.

I kinda want a bolt action in Blackout but it doesn't do much that my AR doesn't.
If you shoot subs that won't cycle the action of an AR, they can be loaded much quieter, even without a can.
I had a load for 245mbcs @ 850 from my RAR, that was about as loud as a .22 hi-v, but not nearly as sharp a sound.

I liked the RAR, but didn't find it useful and traded it away. I only shot supers in my AR, but also got bored with that one.

I occasionally shoot 265gr around 800 FPS and I managed to get them to cycle my AR just fine. I'm also definitely NOT an AR snob (in fact I'm not really a fan of the platform).

The appeal in this new Savage is certainly present for me. Since the desire is there, I will most likely end up with a bolt gun in Blackout eventually. The end result will likely be that one gun will sit much more than the other.

Getting them to cycle was never an issue for me either, but to do so I had to use a heavier charge of slower powder. Which was significantly louder than the 4.5-4.7gr of 231 which was what my bolt gun used.
With a Can it might not have mattered, but we can't have them here.

6.6 lbs feels a little heavy for such a small bolt gun. Your average 16" AR weighs the same despite being semi-auto, and the CZ 527 comes in a full pound lighter.

Guess the bench shooting crowd won't care, but the main point of packing around an intermediate caliber bolt gun vs something like a 308 is lighter weight, and the Axis just doesn't provide that.

The Axis stock is flexy and of low comb.
Even if you mod the bolt and or make a cheek riser, stiffen the stock........it still feels overall like crap.
Mine after such mods (.243 win) was half incher w factory 100gr Win PP.
Shocker.
It shot great, looked like crap and felt crappier..........but it would shoot.
So I sold it after all that work, at a significant loss and went 700 ADL synth.

If wanting to play the switch barrel game on the cheap.........Stevens 200.
Or maybe Rem 783
