I just picked up a Smith 2213, which I believe is the stainless model of the 422. It only comes with one magazine, but I went ahead and got it thinking I could find extra magazines for it here and there...
Yeah, right. New ones still in the wrapper made back in the 90's are going for well north of $100 at the usual place... which screws up my whole cost calculus if this is the only option available to me, being one who likes to have three, or at least just two magazines.
However, I AM seeing NEW magazines available for the 422/2206 model. I believe this is the same thing as the 2213, except with a longer grip and a 10-round magazine instead of the eight round magazine found on the 2213.
I've looked at a disassembly of a 422 and it is described as the same disassembly as the 2213. The magazine catch is located inside the front strap of the grip, and the magazines for both models have an indentation in the front edge that obviously is engaged by this magazine catch.
So the question is, is the 422 magazine the same as the 2213 magazine, except with a 10-round capacity instead of eight? And, with the magazine catch on the 2213 engage the indentation on the 422 magazine and hold it in place correctly?
If I have to settle for a 10-round magazine as a second magazine, sticking out the bottom of the grip a short ways, that's no problem. So long as it works, and it can be bought for something reasonable like $33, instead of well north of $100...
(Somebody needs to get on the stick and start making some new 2213 magazines. Captain Obvious told me to say that.)
