traded my old beat up 45 hawken rifle for this M1870/87 Italian Vetterli-Vitali in 10.4x47R. marked 1889, guns in good shape, the bore looks new. i was given some cut down 8mm label ppu brass, i do plan to shoot it, have not decided to just use pyrodex or 4198 or pistol powders. the gun is all matching, tho i don't think the cleaning rod is original. i think i did a good trade for this, if anyone has one share yours and your loads.

my cat was helping with the pictures and playing with the cleaning rod lol. i still have to slug the bore, i should do a chamber cast and see if i can just use normal 44 bullets, if not i can jst seat them and the lead shaved off will make the healed bullet needed. thanks. troy.

I picked up some from a shop in Montrose a few years ago but when I was reenacting I bought from the artilarists. They would buy a 50 lb keg. Make 1 lb 5 in tin foil charges then sell in 1 lb cans. It is cheaper to buy bulk but have to have proper storage.

Man those are goofy guns!
Looks like a good trade to me, looking forward to hearing how the old beast shoots.

it should shoot good, the bore looks like new. i just id a chamber cast. the grove is .426 to .427. they are weird looking that's why i like them.
That bore is like new, amazing!

I think its more steampunk cool than weird myself- like it would go well with a Gunblade from Final Fantasy. :D

In any event, nice work, Troy, good luck with the ammo!

thanks, ya i gasped when i looked down the barrel, i did not even put a patch down it when i took that pic.

When I was a kid the next door neighbor had one of these on a big board/plaque in the living room as decore. His wife disliked it. The worst thing is he would not let the 12 year old from next door play with it. Over the years he let me shoot his Walther PP .32ACP, a five inch S&W M&P (Model 10), and a green Teflon coated Universal .30 Carbine, but never let me play with the Italian/Swiss rifle.

Even after one of Dad's friends let me keep a Mauser 71/84 that Bannerman or Sears had carbinized back in the day for a few months.

An uncle had a swiss .41 RF with the tube magazine I once got to play with ( he had about 30 rounds of ammo as well) but he died while I was over seas and no one seemed to know what had happened to great grand dad's old rifle when I got home.

One was used in the movie "Serenity". (the Fierfly movie, not the current movie of the same title) My best friend has one, but has not tried to load for it.

Personally I would not use any smokeless powder, especially pistol powders in it.
BP operates at a much lower pressure level.

i've never seen that movie, and i've seen a lot. is it the 2005 one. i loaded up about 17 rounds with a 200 grain lee bullet (the only 44 bullets i have left). with 11.5 grins TB. i just have to find a die to size the neck down some more, if not i wil size the bullet more. i want to keep the largest bullet i can fit.
