S&W M28 front screw for rear sight assembly keeps loosening

My rear sight hardware would loosen on my S&W 327 and my model 19. I removed the screws. Degreased the threads in the frame and on the screws and used a small drop of Loctite blue on them. They have not loosened since.

if You’re talking about the tiny little screw at the muzzle end of the rear sight, yes. Loctite it if it keeps coming loose.

A Smith rear sight actually acts as a spring. That little screw is the only thing holding it down.

I’ve rarely seen those shake loose, the spring tension generally keeps them from vibrating enough to loosen. But, if it’s not stripped out, I would raise the rear sight as far as possible to remove tension, Loctite it, let it set and then adjust the rear sight back to where it’s supposed to be.

I assume you mean lower the rear sight as far as possible, but good idea. I'll do that.

Raise it. You want the tension off the front screw. It’s holding the spring tension opposite of the rear adjustment screw. The rear sight screw pulls down on the spring tension as you tighten it.

Honestly, it won’t make much of a difference. It’s just a little easier to get the front screw in if you’re not having to push down on the rear sight “tail” for lack of a better term.

I must not be understanding how it works. I thought front screw secures the front of the "spring" and the rear screw raises it and thus increases tension as it lifts the rear sight higher.

It has a little bit of curve.

Front screw holds it on, back screw adjusts elevation.

But yes, to take it off you want to take tension off of the front screw. Back the back screw out IIRC. It should be obvious when you try it.
