I've been shooting M10, M28, M340, Python, and Officers Model Target HB quite a bit lately, trying to evaluate my MBC 158 coated SWC loads over 4.2 231.

I am left eye dominant but right handed. I get pain pretty quick from the bare blackstrap or grips impacting the innermost joint where my thumb meets my hand. It is to the point where I don't want to shoot these awesome revolvers anymore. The only one that doesn't hurt is the officers model with Pachmeyer rubber grips that cover the back strap. Not sure if the grip or the shape is the issue.

Ideas? Do I need to get grips that cover the back strap? Do I need to shoot left handed? Shooting right eye is not an option.

Will a weaver stance move the impact away from the left side of my hand and more into the meat?

I'm going to drop the charge a bit in the meantime.

I had to start using Hogue Monogrips to be able to shoot my .45ACP revolvers. They're not so expensive that it would be a big risk to buy one and try it out.

Have you looked at Nill Grips? I had a lot of similar discomfort with some of my guns until I started putting good wood grips on my guns. Nill makes a lot of options for S&W revolvers. I find I need a closed back strap on L frames otherwise they beat me up. I also get a more appropriate trigger reach for my hand size.

You could always just send the offending revolvers to me in trade for some in 22LR. No recoil. problem solved.

Sorry, someone was going to say it so why not me?

Seriously though some different grip styles may help. Also try shooting left handed if you haven't. Shooting weak side isn't all that hard for a lot of people to get used to. Especially if you're left eye dominant.

Thanks. I didn't know they made wood grips that covered the backstrap. Now I just need to sell two of my revolvers to pay for a set. :D

What grips are on the other guns? Rubber grips are generally ugly but they are much easier to shoot with. Any of my regular shooters have rubber grips on them.
Python has wood finger groove presentation type grips. They are terrible but look great. M28 has Ahrends retro target stocks, smooth. I could put the OEM magnas back on and find a T grip I guess. Not sure they're any better. M10 has sambar stag and they look and feel great until I shoot it. M340 has crimson trace with rubber backstrap and they're about as good as it gets with this pocket rocket.

<chuckle> You just described me and my experience with my new 629 in 1989. The pretty OEM wood grips beat the crap out of that thumb knuckle. Blood every time.

My 629 "solution" started with a set of Pachmayrs. OK. A decade later I some Hogues. A little better. About 10 years ago I saw that Pachmayr was hawking a new type of grip ("Decelerators"?). I got a set and I believe that they are as close to perfect as I am ever going to find. ;)

I vote monogrip as well. I know they are the best I have ever put my hands on. Changed the whole sport for me.

Interesting thing is I don't have trouble with .44 mags and .45 Colts in SA revolvers. It's just the DA grip that bugs me.I guess the plowhandles allow the gun to buck/move more or something.

I have the M10 with stock wood grips and a M64 with rubber grips. Same gun but very different felt recoil. The rubber grips are much easier on the hand. They may be stock, not sure because they were on it when I bought it used.

The Hogue Tamer grip that comes on X frame revolvers are pretty comfy, they close up the back strap in X and L frames revolvers (same grip frame size), fill the hand better, and are quite cheep.

Might do the trick.

Whatever you do don’t ignore the pain and keep doing the same thing that you have been doing. I have very painful arthritis in my right hand at that exact joint and in my wrist because I kept abusing my hands with heavy loads after multiple injuries over the years to that area of my hand.

Unfortunately it make take some experimentation to find what works for you, which means buying grips until you find what works...unless you know folks that already have grips you can try.

I would definitely recommend not pushing your luck shooting magnum loads in light handguns.

My 2 cents

I’ve never needed to have the back strap covered, but I find wood grips very uncomfortable unless I’m shooting 38s in a heavy L Frame. I put rubber grips on everything I shoot. I hope you can find a good solution. It would be a shame to not be able to enjoy your revolvers. Good luck!

do they make them for square butt Ns? and round butt K?

The majority of my handguns get treated with Pachmeyer grips. Wood or bone grips are primarily for looks. I prefer function.
Wooden finger groove grips were designed by the devil in my opinion.
