Some real nice Gentlemen and great shooters too!

Joined them for my 1st ever Cowboy Action Shoot this last Saturday with the Southern Missouri Rangers. https://www.so-mo-rangers.com/.

They showed me how it's done, both of them using Black Powder. I shot factory smokeless this time around. Figured I'd learn the ropes before adding the difficulty of Cap & Ball BP into the mix.

About 15 men, women, and children there of all ages. Shot on 5 different stages. Was a good time, targets were close and nearly impossible to miss. 1st time out I wasn't concerned with the clock and just had a good time and be safe while doing so.

Found I was "quick" using my pair of Uberti 1873 revolvers (Hombre & El Patron) and Rossi 92 lever action (using 38 special factory smokeless in all 3). I was slow manipulating my "new" Winchester 97 shotgun. Need to work the action harder to eject spent shells plus watch some videos on using it for cowboy action. Found the gun - 1927 DOM at a garage sale for $300, 2 weeks ago, and test fired it out front of the house (for the 1st time) before heading to the shoot. It works!

Good welcoming group of people. Was kind of fun seeing older cowgirls (guessing - 60's through 80's) blasting away with the full complement of guns. They all shot faster than I did.

Drobs fit in easily, a good shooter and a friendly gentleman. It upset me more than him that we threw a rifle reload at him on his very first ever stage! It was fun to shoot with you, and hope you will become a regular.

That rifle reload made it fun. I'll definitely be out there again. Need to pull my old Lyman Turret Press out and start reloading again. By the way, I'm shopping for a Winchester 1873. I really liked yours. Probably stick with 357 / 38 special.

Welcome to the fire! I shot a ‘97 for several years before my wife claimed it as “her” shotgun.

Every new shooter is slow with the shotgun because of the requirement to load it “on the clock”. You will find that a little practice goes a long way and your stage times will improve.

Don’t use weighted snap caps to practice loading the ‘97. The extractor is designed to pull an empty hull so a heavy “dummy round” will stress the extractor. As someone who reloads shotshells to crimp some empty hulls for you. You can fill the primer pockets with silicone or just use the button on the receiver instead of dry firing.

A decent shotshell belt is a good investment. Doc Noper makes good ones.

Echoing J-Bars sentiments, It was a hoot being able to meet face to face and shoot with a fellow forum member. You can ask Flossie to run a want add within the SMR mailing list for a '73. There may be someone with one for sale. Look forward to shooting with you in the future.

PS, be careful using the little old ladies descriptor
