... like I need another hole in my head! But...

That thread in the rifle forum about projects in limbo got me thinking.

There are a bunch of low budget pistols out there. I'm thinking of something different than other low-budget threads though.

I'm thinking of a project, just for fun. What pistols out there are #1, cheap? I'm looking for something cheap because I want to be cutting on it. I would like to mill the slide (myself! Don't be suggesting a Glock because I can get a milled slide!) for a reflex sight, I would like to put a thumb rest on it, and make myself a cheap little race-ish gun! It's never going to be a real race gun, I understand that fully, but it will be cheap-ish because I'm going to be doing all the work, making my own parts, and counting my time as free.

Project list:
1. Mill the slide for reflex sight
2. Do a trigger job, IF starting with DA/SA, making it SA only.
3. Thumb rest (Not sure if this will work on a plastic frame, but I've got some ideas)
4. Extended magazine release
5. Flared magwell

So... where do I start?

Sarsilmaz B6P $250 from CDNN
Sarsilmaz CM9 $260 from CDNN
S&W M&P (used) <$300 PSA and others
EAA Girsan MC28
Canik? Anybody point me in the right direction there?
Of course there are also the Tristar CZ copies, and I could get a metal frame as well.

Anybody have other ideas? Ideas get bonus points if they use CZ 75 magazines, but I'll look at other ones too. Unless you say, "Hi-Point!" I've already considered that one, and decided against it.

I've been tempted by that gun for about a year now, and I keep exercising my restraint. It's just not quite what I'm looking for. The larger "compact" guns, like the SAR CM9 G2 are MUCH bigger than that one. I think the Star would make a great CC piece for someone looking for 1911esque manual of arms, but I'm trying to build a semblance of a race gun here. Smaller perhaps, but definitely bigger than that.

Plus, it's too good as it is to ruin it!
