What can you tell me about these? Were they good, bad or what? I'm looking at a new full size nine and this is on my list. I have another Taurus, a compact 9mm, and a revolver in .357. Looking on line, the Taurus is definitely affordable, but not if a piece of junk.
Thanks.

I have a PT99AF (PT92 with adjustable sights) since 1988. I carried it as a duty gun for about 5 years. The only problem I ever had with it was after about 10 years was the rear sight leaf broke. The gun did take a beating some times. I've seen the same thing happen with S&W revolvers. Sent it to Taurus and got it back in about 2 weeks.

Feeds all hollow points no problem. Never used +P or +P+ as they don't really give any advantage IMO.

The gun is very reliable. FWIW it still has the springs and all the parts it left the factory with, except the rear sight.

They're very good pistols. I have the PT99AF and 917C.
I buy surplus M9 mags and modify the mag catch notch. They work great and cost about $15.

I've got the PT101AF which is the .40 with adjustable sights. Bought it in ~1994. Great pistol. The front pin for the adjustable rear has broken 2X but I've had good luck with Taurus customer service.

I'd get the non adjustable sight version if I could start over.

The Taurus PT92 is a great full size 9mm. that is probably the best gun Taurus ever made. Reliable, durable, and well built, it's a solid performer with a DA/SA trigger that delivers decent accuracy.

IIRC, Taurus "inherited" an actual Beretta factory in Brazil after Beretta finished a military contract there. Their older PT92's and PT25's and so forth are not much different than the original Berettas. Over time their details have diverged a bit. For instance the little tip-up autos are DAO now, and the PT92 types have a different (and better) safety.

I bought a PT99 (92 with adjustable sights) brand-new in 1990. It has never given me problems and still shoots just fine.

I have a PT92C and it is quite the shooter. Goes with every trip to the range. The bad on the "C", mags are very hard to find and costly when you can find them. I once contacted Taurus to find some info on this gun and they did not have a record of import for it which causes a problem for warranty repair. So how it got here is unknown. It is also the only one I've ever seen that has a white outline rear sight.

It is the gun pictured in my avatar.

The Taurus 92 is a very good pistol. I've owned my Pt92 for 34 years or so, been so long I can't remember the exact year I bought it anymore. One of the old style with simple frame mounted safety, not a hammer drop. It has been one of my most used handguns shooting many thousands of rounds over the years. I've shot everything from rather high pressure military sub ammo, cases of Chinese Norinco, steel case Wolf, other Russian ammo, S&B, along with lots of hand loads and defensive ammo. It serves as a SD gun when traveling and for home defense.

The Pt 92 has been extremely reliable but like any Beretta M9 type pistol the locking block will eventually break after enough use. Mine lasted for more than 25 years before finally failing but a replacement was easy to obtain from Taurus and it was back in service. I also replaced the recoil spring at the same time just because. Those have been the only mechanical things I've replace though I've put on several different grips just to change things up.

They didn't inherit it, they bought it from Beretta. Beretta built a factory in Brazil to build their 92 to fill a military contract. When they completed their contract, they sold the factory and all the tooling to Taurus.

The Taurus 92 is often consider a better gun design than the Beretta 92 because they moved the magazine release up behind the trigger guard and retained the frame mounted thumb safety.

Beretta moved their thumb safety off the frame and onto the slide , for a combo safety/decocker, when they produced the 92S (1978). They didn't move their magazine release from the heel of the frame until the 92SB (1982?)

I had an older PT99 (pre-decocker) for several years and it never skipped a beat. I lost it in a straight trade (a Universal M1 Carbine, also now gone). I own and have owned many Taurus handguns and have never had problems with them.
You'll do fine with one.

Another option you have available to you is the EAA Girsan Regard (https://g4gguns.com/product/eaa-girsan-regard-92-9mm-19rd-blk)
It's a Turkish close copy that uses 92 magazines.

At least nine nations have adopted the PT92, or a variant thereof, for military and/or police sidearm use. This is one of a few models Taurus got right, and they got it right from the beginning.

I had 2 of them and they were nice, reliable guns. But I wish I had spent a few more dollars and bought the Beretta 92FS instead. I did eventually get the Beretta 92FS, sold it and bought a Sig P226 (German model with folded slide). Still have the Sig P226 and wouldn't trade it for any of the other guns mentioned.

jdh writes (to my saying Taurus got the PT92 right from the beginning):

Because Beretta setup the factory for them.

Beretta may have "set up the factory for them", but Taurus chose the materials and machining techniques. They certainly could have cut some corners while still using the factory.

"They didn't inherit it, they bought it from Beretta. Beretta built a factory in Brazil to build their 92 to fill a military contract. When they completed their contract, they sold the factory and all the tooling to Taurus."

I was just attempting to make a long story short.

I've heard good things about their version of the Beretta 84 also, but I've never shot one.

My shooting buddy has a Beretta 92 and I have the Taurus. His trigger is better. My safety is better. In the end, the accuracy is the same and they're both reliable. I would be happy with either one.

Yes the PT 92 is the flag ship for Taurus. I bought mine in the late 80s and thousands of rounds later it still functions perfectly .
