45-70 plinker rounds

405gr on top of 24.3gr of A5744. Not sure on the velocity, but man it was a blast. Maybe 1200 fps if that. Real low recoil, groups were pretty good for offhand and 102 degree temps. Made 40, and shot 10. Can't wait to shoot the rest. Thanks for all the help everyone.

I had good accuracy with 5477 but until I got up to Levergun Max loadings I'd get a lot of "powder zombies" speckling the bore that would inevitably find there way into the camber dimpling the brass on subsequent shots.

I like 4759 and 4198 for Trapdoor - Levergun level loadings. Same good accuracy, cleaner burning.

Reduced loads are something I've been using in rifle loads (30-30, 308, 30-06, 38-55, 45-70) since the 1970's. Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique, W231 ... No filler. They've worked great. There is some good data at http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

A few years back we tested the long range capabilities of these light 45-70 loadings using Unique under a 405-425gr cast bullets. They worked well out to 600 yards. Beyond that they weren't as consistent as 4198 loads. Video below.

I had the same thing happen with some reduced loads for my 460 revolver.

When I'm not shooting black powder, I've loaded and had good luck with 5744
45-70
405gr RNFP
27.0gr 5744 (max listed low pressure load in manual)
CCI 200
Sharps Carbine: 1250fps
Buffalo Classic: 1,360fps

I've loaded up to 29.0gr of 5744 for use in a Marlin lever action only.

Well IMR 4198 is next on my try list. I did notice a few unburned kernels in the barrel but nothing real terrible. I was surprised that 5744 metered as good as it did. I did end up trickling them up to exact each round, but I probably could have just let it go as they were close enough.

It's kind of strange calling this a plinker lol. 405gr at over 1000 fps is still a hell of a load, just not as high as I could go with my Marlin but I'm happy with trapdoor loads for now. Thanks for all the help.

My previous Government was a Marlin 1895 LTD V... a very nice rifle, but balloon head me went and loaded what I thought were mid-range loads... around 1800fps. I wound up pulling almost 100 cartridges because I couldn't take the recoil, and eventually sold the rifle. Now I'm at 1300fps with my 1885, and I can shoot 50rds or more at a setting, no problem.

Yeah Charlie98 I shot some factory 300gr Winchester Super X. I believe they were 1880fps on the box. Even though it was a smaller bullet, at that speed they weren't real fun to shoot lol. They were fun somewhat because that was all I had and the gun was brand new, but I wouldn't want to shoot 100's of them. Those 405gr factory Remingtons or my handloads, I could shoot all day.

My 45/70 I shoot the 500 gr. gc. lee mold .
I use the load I hunt with 1300 fps. I always
know what to expect.
