Getting the hots for a .41 Magnum

It overlaps with .357 energy levels. The 10mm is a fine round but even loaded to it's maximum it does not compare to the .41 mag on up.

I've always considered the 10mm to be a .357 in a normal sized auto frame.

I've had many people tell me they load their 10mm to .41 mag levels. Let's forget that the .41 Mag has half again the case capacity and uses the same powders. It's funny that not one of those people own a chronograph.

I have my Glock 29 in a IWB , loaded with Underwood 180gr Gold Dots ...Shopping
Thats a advantage of a 10mm

As already mentioned, reloading is the way to go because of cost and availability.

Found a S&W salesman's 58-1 a couple of years ago.
I hadn't even heard of a .41 Mag prior to that.
I like it very much & have 2 loads for it, as I roll my own.

21 grains of Lil Gun for a VERY serious load - 210 gr. XTP
I know I'd hate to get hit by it. My chronograph says 1275+fps.

And a MUCH more sedate 5grs of Titegroup & a 210-215 gr Lead Semi-Wad Cutter.
This load runs about 875 fps.
Starline has 41 Mag & 41 Spl brass.

I'll be honest, I don't ever recall seeing ammo on the shelf to feed it.

A question for the 41 mag owners ..
What personal defense 41 mag. ammo options for use with a 2.5 inch barrel ?

Ah yes, I am a caliber junkie as well! I have bought several firearms just to be able to reload for them. (5.7x28, 480 Ruger...) But now that I am retired I need to cut back and thus won't be getting into the .41. I wish I could...

Assuming factory ammo is preferred, I'd just go with the Winchester Silvertip 175 JHP. There's no sense in maxing out the .41 magnum for self-defense against human assailants.

It's unfortunate that there aren't more SD ammo choices for .41 Magnum. Especially considering the original intent of the cartridge's development. I for one would like to see a well designed hollow point in the 210gr range, doing maybe 1000 - 1100fps from a 4" barrel.

Ah yes being a caliper junkie has it's down sides. I to am reaching retirement time of life and am starting to feel the down side of old age.
While bullseye shooting handguns has always been a mainstay endeavor deer hunting and my most favorite passion Pheasant hunting also play into my time. When my best buddy Sonny the wonder dog past away (seen in the avatar) I lasted a month before
acquiring a new pup and boy this guy, now 19 months old is killing me, loving every minute of it, but I just don't spring back like I used to. :(
Hence the desire to do more reloading and handgun shooting.

Easily done with handloads, but some people don’t want handloads for self-defense.

Basically the same ballistics as the 10mm Winchester 175gr Silvertip round ..
I will stick with my 29 or 20 with UW 180gr Golddots

Self defense isn't a concern as a .45 commander is my first choice for that task.
By the way is there a button I can turn on to keep the Glockettes from posting on my inquiries? :scrutiny:

My FIL has a model 58 that is willed to me. I actually like him, so I can wait.

What a nice answer. My sons look in my gun safes and know that all my guns will be theirs someday. They keep asking what day that will be?:(

I have owned 3 Blackhawk's and one 6" model 57 and sold them all. The 41 is a nice round but didn't do anything more than the 44 mags I have owned. But if you like it then I say go for and have a ball. Nothing wrong with that round at all.

Yep. That’s where the notion that 10mm=.41 magnum comes from.

It seems like that power (and recoil) level is the upper limit of what is optimal for handgun use against humans. You can up the power level, but the splits get too big in exchange for too little gain.

Unuque can be fun. I never understood the appeal of the .41 mag over the .429 (44 mag)? Especially for hand loaders, it just seems like there is a much bigger selection of bullets available. But I do understand that it is just nice to be different some times.
The 41 Magnum was never intended as a competitor for the 44 Magnum. It was intended to be a better option to the 357 Magnum and it excels at that task!

The 41 mag can certainly catch your interest and I enjoy the fact that it is NOT a 44 Mag. I own a number of M57's including a blued Mountain Gun. Owned a Red Hawk in 41 mag and didn't shoot it and sold it when someone interested in it popped up. Still own a Black Hawk in 41 mag. The Smith's are enough for me. The Mountain Gun is the one I carry woods bumming if I want a larger caliber than 38 spl or 22LR.

Originally purchased a 8 3/8" M57 for deer hunting as I felt the 357 mag wasn't quite enough. I still believe that.

I stumbled into an S&W M57 8-3/8" barrel a couple years ago. I was not really looking to add a 41 Mag to my collection but I've become a junkie for 8-3/8" S&W revolvers.

One of these days, I'll load up some ammunition and shoot the revolver. I really do not expect it to much different than my other long barreled N-frames.

Winchester has either the 175grn Silvertip, or the 240grn Silvertip... and almost everyone makes a 210grn HP cartridge, including Speer with their excellent Gold Dot (which, now that I look for it, has been discontinued. Good thing I have about 400 component bullets...!)

I bought my first M57 (8 3/8") to use deer hunting in the late 80's. At the point, the largest caliber I owned was a 357 mag Python and it was mostly purchased for deer hunting in the early 80's. The recoil was certainly more than the 357 but I was dead set on learning to shoot this one reasonably well. What I discovered was it basically shot like an iron sighted rifle and I could hit out to about 100 yds with open sights.... not perfect but about soda can accurate. I tried different loads and they pretty much all shot really well. I later bought a couple 44 mag M29's, but there was no love for them and I sold them off within about a year. The 41 mag did everything I wanted it to do and I didn't need a 44 mag. I eventually upped the power level to 480 Ruger in a Ruger SRH to scope. I didn't want to drill my M57 for mounts. Things have remained at this point although I did get a BFR in 475/480 that was a lot more pleasant to shoot than the SRH.

Get a good 41 mag revolver if you can deal with the ammunition issue. I mostly shoot factory ammo in mine.

I'm a caliber junkie, I love reloading for all my firearms especially the odd balls.
Never had a .41 mag. so it is starting to call out to me.
Problem is the only one I'm interested in is the Smith 657 pre-lock mountain gun. Probably going to take a while to find but in the meantime I'd like some insight from those who own one.View attachment 847879
I am one of the lucky ones who owns a pre lock model 657 Mountain Gun. Keep looking and you just might find one sometime, although they can be a little pricey. The 41 mag is my sentimental favorite round, and I have the Mountain Gun and a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk also in 41 mag. It is an outstanding caliber, and a great one to have in the collection. My son-in-law really likes my Mountain Gun also, and hopes that it will be his some day. Good luck on your search. wyatte

I was lucky enough to get a pre-lock 625 mountain gun in .45 Colt and it is my favorite for walking the woods. While a 1911 is my first choice for home defense and concealed carry the ,45 Colt is perfect for the toothy critters found here in the north woods and light enough to be comfortable on long forays in the brush like when I'm Grouse hunting.
I imagine the 657 is a little heavier due to it's smaller caliber.
