Just saw one just like it at a LGS last week. Consignment sale for 3k. I got to look it over and now I see what the big deal is with the snake guns. Wow what a smooth action. I put it back on the counter and ended up leaving with a blued Taurus 65 4 inch 357 mag. Cost me $229.00/tax. Just a bit cheaper than the Diamond Back. LOL.
Nice catch Snake.

I wanted a Diamondback badly when I first got on the job in 1969, but the price was substantially more than a S&W Model 10, which I settled for.

Probably just as well as it would have been criminal to subject it to the beating a duty gun gets.

Yours is a beauty, good luck with it!

Last cheap Colt I bought in a store was my magnum carry a few years before the collector market sent prices soaring. 2004 or so.

Did get a new Cobra for 550.

I think I paid $450 for the DB around 2007. It was in the box with the papers and the hang tag still through the trigger guard. The King Cobra was $600 and I don't recall when that was purchased. It was a Father's Day gift. We also have a four inch Python in the safe, but I bought that for the wife. She wants to be buried with it.

I was looking hard at one a few weeks ago in 22lr but I just couldn’t see shooting it enough to justify it

That's a real beauty!

I've only shot one Python, that was way back in the mid-80's when a friend of mine was going through the police academy up in Humboldt..he would let me borrow his 4" stainless Python and I'd go plinking about out on the jetty with .38 SWC reloads. I still recall the fantastic trigger pull in both DA and SA, and if I could have afforded one I would've run out and bought one then!

Nice find, glad to see there are still some gems out there for those who are seeking them :).

Sssstay sssssafe. ;)

I inherited a 4" Colt Diamond back blue in .38 Special, from my Dad. Diamond backs are just a scaled down Python. They are one of the very best revolvers ever made. Anything Colt made in that error was beautifully made. In my option no other firearm manufacturer can blue a gun like Colt can. Colt bluing is head and shoulders above what others do. The handguns colt produced in that error, be it Pythons, Diamond Backs, Woodsman's. Even the Huntsman and Tragetsman, and the Government models. We're just beautiful firearms. The Trooper MKiii were cheaper made guns to compete with the cheaper revolvers made by Ruger and others, and even the Trooper was well above what others made. Colts from that error were just too well made to survive. Firearms were being made less hand fitting and finishing and with cheaper manufacturing in the metal with castings. Colt just could not produce these firearms at a price that was compatible. It is sad the days of firearms made like that are gone. They have been replaced with aluminum, cast steel and plastic and molded or stamped out internal parts. One can handle a handgun from that error and a current made one and they can see and feel a big difference. We will never see firearms made like this again. When I go in a gun shop, I head straight to the used section. There's nothing but plastic in the new section. I would love to find a 4" blue Diamond back . 22. I think the Diamond Back .22 is the prettiest and most well made .22 revolver ever made. They give a revolver man the same feeling a shotgun man has with a fine made double gun. I don't see Colts from that error ever going down in value. It hasn't been too long a go the auctions sights had many for sale, that were new condition guns, now days you are fewer and fewer. The supply is drying up. Great gun and great find.

Had the "Baby Python"-

Still have the "Poor Man's Python"-

They are nice to play with and look upon, but, if I were being 100% honest, I didnt love the .38 Diamondback. My Model 15 would outshoot it.....Would still like a chance to shoot the .22 version back to back with my M17.

The Trooper can hang with my 686 when shooting Magnums, but groups open up alot when feeding the Colt .38spl cases.

Nonetheless, they are still attractive additions to any collection, thanks for sharing, Snake.
