Got my second 853 from the CMP, a belated retirement gift to myself. Cleaned and refinished the stock, just finished sighting in . Now for the rain to stop. These 853s are so accurate I'm going to try some bug busting this summer. A piece of cardboard,a few drops of honey and wait....

What can you use to attract wasps? I've gotten mine all sighted in with a 3x9 (!!!) scope, but haven't had any luck baiting wasps! I've used sugar water, rotting lunch meat, etc., but have only gotten ants to go to the bait, even though wasps are abundant!

The wasps here in north GA seem to like my hummingbird feeders. These are the rust colored wasps that make a paper nest. We also have the blue/black winged wasps but they don't seem to feed on sugary nectar. Both are beneficial so I leave them alone unless they nest too close. Carpenter bees on the other hand... shootingsmilie.gif

We've got nasty black aggressive ones, that hurt like you pinched your finger in a Garand! We've got a few carpenter bees, but I haven't figured out how to attract them either.

I saw a carpenter bee trap being sold- the deal was, you had to catch a live bee to put into the trap to attract more bees. Seemed unlikely I was going to be able to catch one in the first place so I passed.

About a month ago I went to my neighbor's shed to look at his mower. There was a small paper wasp nest in the top corner of the doorway I didn't see and one stung me on the ear as I went inside. Stung for a good hour. Needless to say, the nest was removed with prejustice!

I've been using one of those traps successfully. I never had to catch the first bee -- one always seemed to go in there on his own. If you do have to catch one, I recommend a badminton racket. You can whack them right out of the air. It doesn't kill them, but it stuns them and they fall on the ground. Then you can pop the jar over them and attach it to the trap.

But, to get back on topic, I'm sure shooting them out of the air is a lot more fun!

First gun I used was a Daisy 74- CO2 repeater. Worked pretty good, too, because of the rapid DA shots. Low MV but like 200-plus shots per cartridge. Lately have been using a Daisy 1200 CO2 pistol. Only 60 or so shots per cartridge and it's single action, so it's quite a challenge but still a lot of fun. I think a CO2 200 pistol would be a hoot!

We have a lot of yellow jackets here. They are just plain nasty. In this heat, they're not plentiful. Come fall, you can't go outside with a sugary drink or you get swarmed.

Any tips on cleaning the stock? Mine is in pretty good shape, but has some streaks of dark discoloration. I'd like to try some simple steps before moving to a complete refinishing.

I've used Goo Gone citrus based cleaner, but check on an inconspicuous area to be sure it won't eat the finish. It took the sharpie marker lettering off my CMP 853.

^^ Good point.

I did get buzzed again by a couple while opening a chain-link gate for my tractor. They're nesting in one of the pipe openings in the gate's frame.

I would not waste good honey... any scrap food item or poop spread on said cardboard would work :)
