Anybody care to weigh in on these?

https://www.recoilweb.com/seismic-disturbance-145326.html

My buddy just sent me this link with an lol attached. First I've seen of these. Has anybody been shot with one yet? Any evidence that they even work?

I'm no ballistician but isn't 147 or 150 about the max you want to fire out of a regular duty frame handgun? These are claiming .75 expanded reliably. Sounds interesting but I think I'll be just more than happy with 124gr HST's until the new 9mm anti aircraft incendiary rounds come out...

I just look at this kind of stuff and dont take it too seriously until somebody I consider serious does, kinda like the G2 R.I.P or whatever. Just didn't know what you lots take on it was. Garbaggio right?

Somebody will eventually come out and tell us the square is the best shape for a wheel. Smh.

A 185gr bullet is not necessarily any more punishing to your gun than a 115gr. It just depends on how much powder you put behind it.

Bullet weight is only half the story... What is the muzzle velocity of these heavy bullets? I didn't see that mentioned in the article. A 185gr bullet traveling 500fps isn't impressive... quite the opposite.

Then you have to consider the reliability of the 185gr ammo in your average Joe 9mm hand gun. Sure it may work fine in a couple high priced carbine and a full sized HK... What about the rest of the 9mm hand guns out there?

I am not saying the 185's aren't a great new bullet... There is just no way to tell with the information given. And do they really fill any specific role that isn't currently filled by existing less expensive ammo?

Yeah I was meaning in terms of velocity, penetration, etc... What I read about them didn't seem all that exciting.

Looks like it would make a great 9mm revolver boolit.

BTW, my adblocker was going crazy when I tried to open the link.

SharpDog

I would need to see a lot of testing in pistols similar to what I might use it in. A lot more testing.

You and me both!

Would definitely have to see more long term, real world testing before I would even consider running that ammo through one of my 9mm.s!

It's interesting I guess, but why not just get a 45 if you're wanting big and slow? The energy level on a 9mm at 185 grains has gotta be pretty low - I can't think this thing would be moving at even 800 FPS out of a handgun barrel.

I have loaded "heavy" 158 and 160 grain bullets in 9mm. They were accurate with very soft recoil. Somewhat difficult to load for multiple handguns. The same OAL would not work in all my guns. Pretty tight window for powder charge as well. I gave up on them in favor of 147 & 124 grain bullets.
I can't imagine there being much demand for 185 grain 9mm ammo.

The circle of (ammo/caliber nonsense) life:
  1. Bigger is better! You must have a .40/.45 to get enough mass and momentum for a reliable stop!
  2. None of that matters. All pistol rounds suck, and 9mm is no more sucky than .40/.45.
  3. Try to cram standard .40/lite .45 mass/momentum into 9mm case.
  4. .Realize that, if you want 180 grains at moderate velocities, .40 will give you that with ease, and without any special sauce or pixie dust required. [Return to #1]
Gee whiz...

I wouldn't even buy Federal if they called one of their loads "The quake maker". Much less some brand nobody has even heard of...

Still have a box and a half of the stuff. We were not impressed, really. It was not very accurate out of handguns past 15 yards, and did not perform well in gelatin or water jugs. It appeared to tumble easily instead of expand, as my partner told me after the second video was up and he excavated the gel block. I might try it again in a 9mm carbine, might work better there, but with standard 9mm barrels, I do not think this stuff is stable enough.

@ATLDave
And then, you remember 10mm exists, until you price it out after shooting a friends glock 40 longslide, then remember that, practice and quick precise follow ups are king!

And repeat step 1.

@armoredman

doesnt have a fast enough twist for it?

I think it's very cool right up until they try to market it... Especially when they sell it to people who actually believe it's superior to other types of ammunition. But I respect trying new things even though it will probably never work. Just please don't tell people it's something it's not.

Anyone in Southern AZ want to try a round or two let me know. This stuff is 28 bucks for 21, but the factory sent me the ammo I used free. I don't think they expected our results.

reinventing the British 38/200 revolver round. It tumbled upon hitting which was supposed to enhance stopping people.
I worked up some Kieth style 173 grain LSWC for a J frame @ 600 fps. They would tumble after hitting a wood target stake. Slow velocity made a barely stable bullet.
