picked up a lee mold, anyone load for a 98 mauser with this or similar bullet. i don't have any gas checks but powder coating will be fine. i would have to play with the load to try to shoot p.o.a for the 2 sporters i have. i also want to make a sizer or buy one for .318 for a 1891 argentine mauser in 8x57. thanks.troy.

Here's data from an old RCBS cast bullet manual.
I used to use 12 gr of universal and 9 gr of 700x with a 205 gr.

Lyman also has a pamphlet for old military rifle with the 8x57 listing a couple cast bullets. Not sure if all were gas-checked.

Also, there was, and maybe still is, an old publication available online for old bolt action rifles solely for cast bullets. It went over much range of velocities and bullet weight. From plinking to deer hunting. Mostly using Reddot, Unique, and 2400. I'll look to see if I can find it.

The Lyman Cast Bullet manual #4 is your friend, powder coating is great and it has many added benefits but it doesn't replace a gas check or do what it does. A bullet designed to take a gas check is always going to shoot more accurately once you pass a certain velocity / Pressure threshold. Gas checks aren't that expensive and you don't have to buy 1K at a time either https://www.sagesoutdoors.com/8-mm-323-caliber-gator-gas-checks/

Lyman Reloading manuals are the only load manuals that will have cast bullet data along with jacketed bullet data. The Lyman Cast Bullet Manual is cast bullet specific and will include some powders not normally associated with jacketed bullets that work perfectly fine for cast lead loads and will cover a selection of bullet molds from Lee, RCBS, Lyman as well as SAECO.
