.243 Help

My Ruger #1B shot great for many years. .243 win ....bought used.
Was sub .5 at 100 w handloads.
Eventually groups got close to an inch.

Heard it might be copper build up.
Buddy had the special solvent

It removed just a slight bit. My reg cleaning had it pretty good. Turns out the throat had eroded.

Rather than try heavier bullets.....since it was a varminter.....it went bye bye ( w full disclosure ). If i had the funds then id have had it rebarrelled.

I wouldn't put CLP in the barrel- but it is a good rust preventer for the exterior metal. Hoppes powder solvent is fine, I use MPRO7 myself as a solvent. For copper cleaner I use Sweet's. It smells like cat pee- don't use it inside your house! Also be sure to follow the instructions. I copper clean once a year- after season.
Ok, awesome I don't think I've ever seen sweets before. I know I can get Hoppes at Walmart. I'll try it out.

Hoppes 9 is still the standby? I will putting a few drops of clp down the barrel and flush it through with a bore snake I'm shooting it today after work .
Yeah that will work to clean powder residue and prevent rust..., but you will need something for the copper. Probably not now, but you might, and definitely in the future.
I don't know why but the copper residue used to really affect the accuracy in the 6mm bores faster (it seemed), than in some of the other bores I cleaned. That was, though, decades ago, and so the barrel quality may have improved with new milling procedures for rifling barrels since then.

Guys,

I haven't hunted with a rifle in over 10 years, I have exclusively used Shotgun and Sixgun. I traded my Ruger LCP for a Mossberg Patriot in .243 win. I know I should stick to bullet weight above 80 gr, first thing I will do is sight in the rifle. What bullet selection have y'all used that you trust? Selected game will be white tail and feral hog.View attachment 849754

I haven't read the thread yet, but accuracy will vary one rifle to the next. I generally stick to a 100gr SP... either factory-loaded Winchester PowerPoint or handloaded Hornady Interlock. A deer hit good with those isn't going anywhere.

I double lunged my buck at 50 yards and he went 100. Factory WW 100gr. I was not impressed. BT was not even mediocre.

Dont mind dead over there. Kinda like bloodtrails even when i watched the animal fall over. But i was stunned at the lack of effect putting a factory 100 gr through the lungs.

Have read of similar so bought the other bullet

I had a savage m111 that I bought used. It had some throat erosion. I tried several different brands of factory ammunition. The best I groups I got were 1.5 in until I reloaded with a longer coal.

I bought rem premium 90 gr. Shirocco's and core lokt. Both left heavy copper deposits so bad that the rifling was unrecognizable. Took 2 weeks to get it all out.

After reloading I had great results with 100 gr prohunters and hornandy interlocks with several powders including imr 4350 I and h 4895.

Congrats on your new rifle.

Thanks, in going to try hornady and some others so far the 100 gr monarch JSPs are working the best. I hope to use something more suited for deer but we will have to see how the others shoot.

We have only ever used Sierra 100 gr8 Game Kings.
Nether my Dad or I ever had one get away or had to track one, at least from my memory. Before I started hunting with him, I don't know about.
40 gr8 of IMR4350 in his '46 model 70 or my Savage 110.

I've killed a lot of deer with a 95gr Hornady SST bullet. I have a buddy that always helps me skin and he always comments on how wicked those little SST bullets are to the internals of a deer.

My kids who hunt took their first deer with a Model 7 in .243 shooting 100 grain Remington CoreLokts, which shot about 1 MOA in that rifle. You just need to try a couple of loads. Personally, I'd stay in the 85-105 grain range.

75 and down are, the 58 vmax is deadly on deer. just have to know where to use the lighter bullets.
If the target above is of any indication i need to seriously engage with this rifle to get where i want to be with a 100 gr before I think to even consider a 58gr. Luckily I do have sometime my hunt isn't until December.

My savage 111 would shoot half inch groups fouled. Clean it would shoot about am inch. I'd clean after 1 - 2 hundred rounds if groups opened up where all five shots weren't touching.
Tell me would you trust the shooter in the target above to get a deer or hog (that's me) right now I gotta get that grouping down. I intend on putting alot rounds through it before I call myself ready, rbe animal deserves as much for a humane kill

NOT my best day ever. By far the best grouping was in the upper right hand corner. Best grouping was with cheapo monarch... Go figure.View attachment 850007 View attachment 850008

What range are your group's?

I'm not sure of the kill zone on hogs but a white tail has approximeyly a 9 in kill zone. Given a good solid field position, sitting, prone,.... You could get it done. Trigger time is your friend. Concentrate on basics, trigger control, breath control.... and it will get better. Here it a pic of yesterday's range trip. Rifle m11 savage in 223 4 shot group in bull is 68 gr hornandy hpbt match at 300. 5 shot group at 11 o'clock was same bullet from my Ar mbus sights. Top 3 shots were m11 55 hornandy fmjbt. Was at an indoor range. Longest distance is 25 yards which If memory serves if the rifle is on at 25 it will be at 100, correct?

Generally correct I sight I'm at 25 first to get centered. You might have to adjust hight some at 100. I zero mne for 200 and use bdc recticals or mildot for hold over at longer ranges. It also gives less drop at longer ranges while still allowing a center hold at closer targets.
243 is fairly flat shooting and has enough retained energy for clean kills out to 350 + depending on the bc of your bullet.
