I am looking at the Ruger American 22 LR rimfire rifle. I am trying to determine how to mount a scope to it. It is the model that does not have a picatinny rail on the receiver. Per the spec sheet, it says:
  • A 3/8" rimfire scope base is machined into the receiver, which is also drilled and tapped for Weaver™ #12 bases.
So what is the best way to attach a scope? Should I use the bases machined into receiver or add the Weaver bases? If I use the machined bases, what kind of rings attach to it?

I usually just use the dovetails when I can.

I also normally use either the Weaver quadlock .22 rings, or utg 3/8th dovetail rings.....I'm cheap tho.

I don't like 3/8" dovetails. The mounts aren't especially secure. I install weaver bases, preferably those one-piece bases, but the two-piece bases are okay. Be sure to use Blue or Red Locktite on the threads.

Weaver Detachable Mounts are cheap, but they do a great job. Get the lowest ones that allow your 1" scope objective to clear the barrel.

Hopefully, you have, or get a decent scope...not necessarily a very expensive one, but strong. Weaver Detachable Top Mounts are pretty good for the money. The ones with four screws per mount are the best. The two-screw model tends to cause some rotation when tightening the screws.

When you mount the scope, be sure, before you tighten it down, to set it at the right distance from your eye. You shouldn't have to lean forward, but bring the rifle to your shoulder and have it at the perfect distance to present a full-field. (Directions should be in the scope package.)

If it is drilled and tapped then use Weaver, or Weaver style bases. I assume you're going to mount a 1" tube scope on it. If so then the Weaver 4X4 rings sold at Walmart are as good as anything and a lot cheaper.

I cheated out and bought a Bushnell 4 x 32 .22 Rim Fire in a bubble pack at Walmart for <$40. It came with cheap rings with weaver style bases. It tightens down fine and has maintained zero for 4 years. For the price it’s actually not a bad scope out to 100 yards.

If there is a dovetail machined into the receiver I always use it and never have had a problem. I use Warne rimfire rings.

I hope the 4X4 rings have been improved since I bought some several years ago. The metal on a couple I tried was soft and screws stripped under normal torque.

I've been using them for probably 10 years and have not had a single failure. 17lbs on the top straps, and "squeek" on the rail bolts.
Not saying that it can't happen, but I've found them reliable.
If I forget to order, get the wrong size, or something happens to the nice rings I want for a rig, the quadlocks are what I'll use untill I get things straightened out....I've probably got 5-10set in my parts box right now, and 4 or 5 in use.

.......... Right on. And regarding the Weaver 4x4 rings I've had a set on a sporterized Swedish Mauser holding down a 3.5-10x Leupold for about 8 years now with zero problems.

Burris alloy .22 rings.work OK.
Around 25 bucks.

Still a grooved receiver so no "recoil stop".

I'm sure they make a 1 pc pic rail for the RAR.
You can mount any scope if you go pic rail.
2 pcs bases...........on a rimfire, ought to be close enough to allow dang near any scope.

If going weaver base............cheap rings :Leupold Rifleman.
Aluminum, shouldn't mess up the finish of the scope.

Seems silly, to worry about such..........but my .22 rifles wear Leupolds.

The vertical split Rifleman rings are the other cheap options I've been using a lot lately, I like them.
