I lost my chance. I'm at the end of the line. I'm done. I just physically could not get to the phone before it went to voicemail. I got to the phone one or two seconds too late. I got an email from them that said they don't hold pistols. They make one attempt, and if they can't make contact, they put your packet at the end of the line. I waited from September to almost August and missed it by one or two seconds. They won't return my call, and they won't call me back. I will never have anything to do with CMP again.

That's what happens when you build a Country Club and monument to yourself.

RIP CMP.

The good news is - Springfield makes a much better 1911-A1, for a lot less.

...and they Will return your calls.

I think you mean the Philippines makes...

But this was never about buying a 1911 type handgun; this was always about buying a US Government Issued 1911 handgun. It was about owning a piece of history. As awesome as that Springer might be (or a new Colt or a insert name of manufacturer here 1911 type handgun might be, it won't have any historical value, but I've covered all this already in earlier posts.

Springfield 1911-A1's - are American made.

P.S. Firearms Collecting? - is a mental disorder.

Pretty certain the frames are made in the Philippines. (I think we already discussed this, too, albeit witha n inconclusive ending.)

And by the way, I'm not saying it's a poor quality gun, although I wouldn't trust it; I have a Croatian-made Springer that has been pretty good..thus far.

Mine (w/ the 18.5# Wolff recoil spring and SA OEM stainless mags) has been flawless.

Runs like a ball ammo sewing machine.

Put it up against any other 1911 for functional reliability.

Great trigger and plenty precise.

The USGI rattletraps were attractive - at the $350 they are worth as shooters.

Firearms Collecting - is a mental disorder.

Prior to 2015, Springfield frames/slides were sourced from Brazil (IMBEL - well known Brazilian state arms manufacturer). Pretty darn good quality. Assembly/finishing was done in the US. Post 2015, it seems that Springfield components are all sourced from the US, and assembled in the US. But Springfield is pretty vague on where they now source frames and slides from here in the USA. FWIW, I trust both my Springfield 1911s - have run thousands of rounds through the older one, not a single issue or malfunction. Ever.

I don't see how this thread has degenerated into a discussion about which is better a WWII era US Army issued 1911 versus a new production 1911. I would expect the new production 1911 will be better in all areas, except the only one that matters if you want a WWII gun: History.

We can look at a WWII era 1911 and wonder, could this gun have been in Sicily, or the Ardennes Forest, or Iwo Jima, or perhaps the Wolf's Lair itself.

I am not wondering that about any of my modern production 1911s.

That’s just wrong. Calling is the worst way to try and get hold of somebody. Email should have been sent with a 24 hour window to call back to get gun.

I’ve always supported the CMP, but I agree they have gone overboard. What started out as an organization that sought to increase civilian marksmanship and the interest in shooting sports has turned into a business whose goal it is to make a profit. I don’t care about their mobil air rifle range. They’ll never come to my neck of the woods. I don’t care about their two stores. Too far away for me to get to them.

Look at it this way DB, the CMP gums were a crapshoot. For just a little more you can probably get a GI issue 1911 on the private market. No waiting for phone to ring and you’ll see what you’re getting ahead of time. I have several Garands and I was lucky to get a 1911, but I believe I am done with them as well.

You jumped through all their hoops, got your place in line, waited 8 months and they can’t wait 5 min for you to call them back?

That’s about the most eff’d up thing I’ve heard a long time.

What a strange turn of events. After being told that I had missed my chance, I received an email late yesterday from a different person inside CMP asking me to call her at her direct number. I just now got off the phone with her. (9:15 am Alabama time). She took my driver license number and credit card number and said my pistol should ship this afternoon.

This is a good thing for those wanting a collectable pistol. I hope all of you that applied get one. A rare opportunity for those that want that piece of history. To me the price is a fair bit excessive for what you get. This is to fund the CMP and that is a good thing and they are worth supporting though. BUT I am not a serious collector of anything military. Anything I buy will be used and not babied at all. If one was to fall out of the sky and into my hands I would use it as the tool it is but otherwise no big interest at this point.

Good for some but just not for me. I would rather pay more off a gun broker listing that shows me what exactly I'm getting than take a chance of spending $1000.00 plus and get a worn rattle shaker. Spending that kind of money I wouldn't want to take the chance of being disappointed . If they were selling for $400 or $500 I would take a chance but not when they are $1000.00 plus when all I want is one very nice condition collectible 1911 to satisfy the itch.

I never thought I was taking a chance. CMP will allow you to return a pistol for a refund. That said, I could still be disappointed and not return the pistol.

As has already be discussed, there appears to be two types of buyers of 1911 type pistols-those who like the design and the way they shoot, and therefore want top quality new guns, and those who recognize the historical value.

I wonder if some one at cmp heard about this thread and decided they didn,t need the crap generated by this thread. stranger things have happened.
I don't know. I'm not sure one could connect my posts here with who I am in real life-at least I hope it's not that easy.

I actually fall under both, I want a nice one 80% to 90% grade that will shoot a decent group but not too mint where it will hurt collectible status too much if shot. Only way for me to get that, is see what I'm buying, I expect to shell out around $2000 or so for that when the time comes that I'm ready to get one.

I have four grail handguns I want all which I want a nice one but a shooter also. Colt Python , Luger, Remington Rand 1911A1 and a Colt Anaconda . I have to see what I'm buying in all cases.

CMP is great just not for me. Guys who can drive there and pick out a gun is great, I can't I'm not close to them. Their re-worked Garand specials are something I would buy unseen first though.

I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo who daydreams such things when holding a piece of history. I even look at antique cars and wonder the history of those. Did someone rush their wife to the delivery room in this car to bring their baby into the world? It's much more dramatic when holding a 1911 or Garand. I can lose hours.

I have a Python and an Anaconda from when they were still being made and you didn't have to pay four figures for either one. No burning desire for the RR 1911. The Luger is in the same boat as the RR, although I always thought they were very elegant. My Ithaca .45 with which the Army laughingly expected me to qualify as an MP was looser than a sack of peas. The picture of it is in the dictionary next to the phrase "shot out".

I have to see what I'm buying in all cases.

I agree. I buy some things online sight unseen, mostly books and dvds/blu rays. Expensive things that aren't new I want to handle and look at before opening my wallet.

Good for you and good on the CMP.

Who said bitchin' was useless.

If you believe that, then you probably believe any kind of collecting is a disorder....

"Firearms Collecting - is a Mental Disorder."
- Garandimal -

Collection - Trivial/Useless Things one collects - like the odd nuts/bolts/screws/washers in the bottom of a tool chest.
Accumulation - Trivial/Useless Things that collect themselves - like lint under a refrigerator.
Acquisition - Useful Things one acquires - like another M1 Garand.

Think as if you were building a Harem.

You’d better be ready to snap some pics and report to us what you received! Congrats on waiting it out. I got mine in I think February and I thought I’d die from anticipation. I wasn’t disappointed. 1942 Colt frame and. 1950’s Colt replacement slide. Very tight. No rattles. Refurbed at both ANAD and Augusta. Re-parked in July 1976. Where did it go from 1942 to 1976? World War II, Korea, Vietnam? Might have guarded a Quonset hut filled with dirty GI underwear but it did so while hanging from a GI’s hip. And no brand new Springfield made in Brazil and Yonkers can touch that.
