Gouged the delta ring on my AR-15. What should I do?

I just replaced the handguard on my AR-15 and really like the new handguard, but I scraped the delta ring pretty badly during the process of removing the original handguard. The delta ring is black and you can clearly see the scrapes. Is there any easy fix for this?

When I was in the Army, we used to disassemble our M16's non-stop (or so it seemed.) It wasn't until I bought a civilian AR that I started having reluctant forearms... and my DPMS in particular. I have that tool that DarkLord posted... thank heaven.

As far as scratches or gouges... meh, whatever. A little cold blue or even a Sharpie will fix that, but my AR's are not wall hangers, either.

Similar experience in the Marine Corps. I was active when we switched from A-1s to A-2s. The A-2s were stiffer but not difficult. I was a FNG assigned to clean the A-2s as they arrived. Does anybody know what's more cool than opening a new crate of rifles?...

Nothing.

The handguards on the SP1 I had back then weren't difficult to remove either. It wasn't until I put together a rifle using a Rock River barrel that I encountered a really stiff delta ring.

As far as scratches on the delta ring itself, I wouldn't sweat it.

Use a black magic marker and while it is still wet wipe off any extra. Yes, it dries fast but I have found it will wipe off if you are quick. Someone makes a pen for doing touch ups but I don't recall the company or name.

Do I need any special hardware, like a vice or any special tools? It was also a pain for me to remove the old handguard and install the new one
To do it right you need a torque wrench to re-install the barrel nut in addition to the tool needed to remove the barrel nut along with an upper block (or soft pine boards) to hold the upper in a vise. The torque is spec'd to something like 40-60 ft-lbs. The range is generous because you need a notch in the proper position for the gas tube when its tight.

So I'd suggest just living with it or a paint touch-up.

Sharpie, flat black spray paint or flat black Testor's model paint. Just touch it up a bit and be on your way, no need to change anything out. When I first got my AR, I was really anal about keeping it like new. But once I got the first scratch on it, didn't really bother that much.

I must admit, I have no Delta Rings to scratch.:(
Nor wife to keep pleased with me.:)

But, an excuse is an excuse. It's only necessary AFTER you have purchased.

Wait...

Don't tell me you talk about it first?!
Whoa, whoa. Never Ask Permission! Ever!

Always ask for Forgiveness, after you get home with it first...:D
