my S&W 10-5 is a short barreled round butt with a wider front sight instead of the narrow ones and I shoot it better than any of my other short barreled revolvers

It's pretty hard to beat a 4" Model 10. That's actually a pretty decent one by the picture.

I picked up one a few weeks ago myself. Mine had the diamond Magna's on it, but they were ROUGH, as is the rest of the gun really, but it was inexpensive (<$250). I had the Pachmayr Presentations in my junk drawer, and they seem to be "just right."

OP, very nice 10-5 at a very good price(IMO). These pics of the pencil barrels are making me wish I had grabbed one when I bought my two HB model 10 NY DOC trade ins. They also had a few nice 10-8 pencil barrel available. IMG_1438.JPG

I've seen those guns for sale before, maybe AIM was selling them. How is the DOC ID label attached, is it removable, and will it leave a mark if removed?

I've currently got a 64, which is basically the same gun, and enjoying it's accuracy.

I have a 4 AND a 5 inch pencil barreled model tens. I love the balance on the 5 and know I dont see many let alone 4 sale. that one on auction if its stays where its at is a steal!

My New York dept of correction model 10s had the tag glued/epoxied. The gun pictured in my previous post(#9) is my 10-10. I also bought a 10-14 from the same batch of NY DOC M10s which the tag had fallen off but the glue remained. Some solvent removed the glue and it left no mark at all on the S&W trademark. Tell you the truth I wish it was still on. I found a M64 police trade in great shape recently for $300 recently and as you pointed out it's very accurate. IMG_1186.JPG

Thanks for the explanation on the NYCDC tags. I worked with some of them and remember them carrying those guns. That outfit also had their own serious folks, the CERT guys (Correction Emergency Response Team) for moving high profile prisoners. They carried MP5's and sawed off pump shotguns, along with, IIRC, Glocks in drop holsters.

They always looked very serious and scanned everywhere. Didn't feel it was right to try and start a conversion with them about guns while they were working.

I retired from LE ten years ago, so no idea what they're carrying now.

You are going to love it. The M10-5 has to be the best handling revolver I own. The size and geometry, with these grips just fit me so well. Recoil is mild. It is the only revolver that I can double action and keep six out of six on a 12 inch target at fifty yards. It shoots to point of aim with 158 Lead and 3.5 grains Bullseye. I have shot ammo cans and cases of 38 Special through it and it keeps on ticking. Wonderful pistol.

I would go back to that shop - and rather quickly - and check out the 5" m.10 . That is a less common find , and the 5" barrel points like a dream. Note the fine case hardening on the 5". Either way , you are in for a fine shooter. I acquired a 4" last year ; the trigger is excellent.

Congrats! I like my 10-5 also; it has been a pleasant and accurate shooter so far.

I can't say why, but this caliber and platform just feel "right" together.
Not just the -5, either. I'm talking about the (pre-)Model 10 in general.
Truly a classic.
