It's likely my favorite revolver in my collection. If there is a revolver that I own that I am "one" with, this is it. The load (used in the show) consists of a 420 grain Punch bullet over a stiff charge of 296 that gives me right around 1,400 fps at the muzzle. Even at that velocity I was able to get around seven feet of penetration on the first (chest) shot that traveled all the way through the rumen. My PH was impressed with the penetration and the general havoc it heaped upon the buffalo. I tested that same load on an even larger water buffalo the year before, with similar results. The revolver has a 5 1/2-inch barrel and I've equipped it with an Ultradot Four. I had originally intended to throw on a lighter Ultradot 30, but decided that since it works so well, it should remain. Other than that, it's an unmodified Precision Center BFR. It's also very accurate.

Which JRH load do you use for defense? I saw the .454 casull vid where you shot if fairly quickly.

Very cool.
I used that same load at the Bovine Bash last year for backup in my other BFR in .500 JRH with iron sights (also a 5 1/2-inch barrel). Now I use Buffalo Bore’s DG load which throws a 400 grain LeHigh flat-nosed solid at about 1,400 fps.

We just watched both episodes today, loved them and looking forward to more! The missus was impressed and whilst we've been angling towards some handgun hunts anyway, you've finally won her over completely and I thank you! I don't want to derail the thread, but I have some questions......
Keeping in mind that I personally run a .41 Blackhawk at the moment:
I saw another show where a hunter took (I believe) a buffalo with a semi auto 10mm, how do you personally feel about the 10mm (revolver or semiautomatic) as a hunting round in North America?
At least 2 friends of mine are looking at the .500 s&w or 50 ae or even the .429 de, what would you say about them compared to the jrh for hunting? (Also I believe that the Wyoming action express is on the table)
Is round count an issue very often? For local game, I have NEVER fired more than one round per target when a hit is scored, but on the table are hogs and black bear, does the 6vs8vs15 come into play? And if so, 6 10mm vs 8 .357 vs 15 10mm? With my Blackhawk and plain 210 rem factory loads I can deal an inch at 25 yds, should optics be on the table and does that play into platform choice? (The missus is just under fist sized at 25 yds with the latest 5.5 inch 73 clone) we're shooting standing unsupported here if that matters.....

I know Razor Dobbs has taken a couple of Cape buffalo with a 10mm. He used a hardcast load from Double Tap. Personally I don't like cast bullets for animals this big as a failure can mean pain - and lots of it. That said, if you can avoid major support bone, you should be okay even though hardcast have been used successfully on everything including elephant. As long as they maintain their nose shape they will go straight and deep. Razor Dobbs is a great shot and he was able to get it done. My personal issue is more about the bullet choice than it is the caliber as the proof is in the dead bovine flesh. Far more important than caliber is the bullet. However, I prefer a bit more margin of error offered by larger calibers, but that is more personal preference than anything else. So yes, the 10mm is capable in the right hands.
The .500 Smith & Wesson loaded correctly is a beast. As long as the right bullets are used (there goes that caveat again), and the shooter is able to shoot it well, it will handily bring everything and anything down without drama. I'm not a .50 AE fan. Can't crimp which makes for a HUGE limitation. In a revolver, the best thing you can do is convert it to .500 JRH. The .429 DE looks interesting and I plan on playing with one in the near future. It should be a barn burner with Swift A-frames. The .500 JRH is my favorite .50 caliber handgun round. It fits in the same confines as the .44 Mag, .454, etc. - meaning a "normal" sized revolver, so it carries easily. You can also load it to fairly obnoxious levels, so it has enough horsepower. Bullet selection is vast (same bullet as the .500 S&W), and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on anything that walks this earth. It's definitely more than enough. The .500 Wyoming Express is the ballistic twin of the .500 JRH so there is no discernible difference in terminal effectiveness. Just have to decide whether you want a cartridge with a rim or a belt. I prefer the former...
Round count is important to a degree. I am of the school that keeps shooting until the animal crashes to terra firma, and then will stick a "cooper (coup de grace)" in it for good measure. Nothing worse than dead animals that reanimate, particularly if they can hurt you. So I tend to not skimp on shots fired. I don't stop shooting and admire my handiwork. There's time for that afterwards...JMHO.

I am no longer young enough or healthy enough to try this but I am sure impressed Max. I have shot Minnesota Whitetails with my 44 Mag Smiths at various ranges so I understand some of what you are doing. Congratulations to you. Speaking of specialty handguns, My Super Sixteen .223 Contender has been very warm in the Dakota dog fields.
