Are the new 870 junk since Remington has had a ton of problems? Looks like Walmart is clearance them and my Mossberg 500 doesn’t fit well for wing shooting. I know the older ones were great but I hear a lot of Remington negativity.

For Walmart clearance price I would buy one if I needed a shotgun. I heard the new ones don't rust like the one I owned in late 1990s.

While it won't be of the quality an 870 made before the 1990's would be, a current one from Walmart will be entirely serviceable. The ones on clearance now are on clearance for two reasons: One, it's inventory time, and two- the gun display mods have changed, and room must be made.

Wingmaster or Express. World of difference in fit and finish. Either will perform fine. My family's 870s are all from an earlier period, except for one express, and from what I've seen the newer ones have plainer wood but fine blueing and seem plenty slick in operation.

Said this on one of the other threads. Yes, they are not good as they were. But i am picking up another one today from walmart. I can bet money on that it has to go back to remington for repair. For the price. its worth it.

2 expresses (both 20 gauge) and one tactical magnum 12 gauge. (or what ever it is called). Each one had over size bored and the spend shells would stick inside the chamber. 3 out of 3. Picking up a forth tonight. express with 28" barrel 12 gauge.

I have 2 recent 20 gage 870 express guns. Both were stiff at 1st as expected.

The older new 870 (4 years old?) has been an absolute gem. The 2nd (2 years old) has jumped the bolt (i dont know any other way to discribe this) and locked up twice. Kinda sucks as you have to strip the gun down to get back in the game. I'm not sure exactly what is causing this but it has something to do with the slide bars and the bolt.

Both are straight shooters. I actually bought the 2nd 20 just for the barrel anyway. With the cost of some 20 gage express barrels , if you can find them, you might be better off just buying another gun.

I shoot a TB from 1975, probably 300,000 rounds. Receiver cracked a few years back. Remington replaced it last summer for $247, about $60 more than I paid for the gun new. Fit and finish on new receiver was way better than the original. Hope to be shooting it until just before they close the lid on me. I was 31 when I bought it, 75 now.

I don’t have any experience with newer 870s but my late 70s era 870 special purpose had a similar problem to the one Robbins290 described, but only with Fiocci shells. They’ve got soft heads and would get stuck in the generously sized bore when the rim would expand and not catch the extractor. My solution was to stick with Federal, Remington, or Winchester shells. It did help me learn a breakthrough in wing shooting since I was stuck with an effectively single shot gun and had to pick shots wisely.

plastic holding on the forend (all the others are steel)

I am going to compare side by side when i get a min to point out exactly what is plastic now

Defective barrels? In what way? WM or Express?
thanks.
All 870s are not near what they were. Better off buying a uses one dated before 1990. They did not ream the chambers correctly on most of the new ones and it causes lots of extraction problems along with ruining shells if your a loader. Also they had lots of wood problems with the stock cracking. The warranty on new 870 Express shotguns is only 2 years. I learned that the hard way. Remington took bankruptcy for a reason.................

Remington warranty is longer than that; they now offer a limited lifetime warranty

Does the stock not fit you on the Mossberg? If the Mossberg works and it's just the stock placement I would opt for a new stock over a new gun. By all means by the 870 if you just want a new shotgun but as others have stated the quality of Remington has slipped in current years and that's all around not just shotguns. If I was going for a brand new pump nowadays it's going to be a Mossberg.

Stock is too small for me. LOP and overall fit.
