I have one of the new Lipsey’s Ruger Blackhawk Flattop models and a Single Six. The Blackhawk has a much thinner grip than the Single Six and after living with them for a while, I like them better. This is apparently the XR3 grip frame. Does anyone know if they make the same grip frame for the Single Six? That, or grip panels that fit the existing Single Six grip frame but feel more like the XR3 grip. Thanks.

I have both Blackhawks and Single Sixes, and have interchanged the grip frames on all of them to see which I liked best 2 are aluminum, one is blued steel and one is stainless, all interchange, there are some minor surface mismatches, if I were to make permanent I would have to file/polish to mate perfectly, but they do all interchange.

The xr3 is about 1/16" narrower and has a little less room for your knuckles behind the trigger gaurd, and is doesn't have that little "flare" towards the bottom of the grip . The simplest thing to do to make your single six's grip feel closer to the xr3 would be to try a thin set of grips. Like eagle gun fighters or Altamont s slim panels. Other wise you'd have to change grip frames.

The Altamont grips are much cheaper and may be worth a try for you . The slim panels are about 3/4 the way down the page under the first Blackhawk/vaquero tab.

Here's how the grips compare.

Any Ruger grip frame from the same era, pre vs. post 1998, will transplant into any Vaquero, New Vaquero, Single Six/Seven/Nine/Ten, Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk. They’re all the same footprint within their respective production eras.

The grip panels will not transfer. But a complete grip frame assembly can be sourced and transplanted.

Thanks, LoonWulf. I appreciate the generosity, but I believe the Single Six already has the XR3-Red. I ordered a set of the Altamont thin grips and we’ll see how close they are to the flat top grips.
