Ruger Blackhawk. What would you do?

I asked the OP for a picture of the dinged sight. So far no picture. But I did look at the Ruger site and all the BH guns have screw on sights. I would just send Ruger a picture or just call them and I bet they will send a brand new sight. Problem solved.
They don’t work that way. What they send is a shipping label...just as they should.

Really? I bought a used Super BH that the cross bolt that locks the base pin in had fallen out. I called Ruger and tried to just buy one and they sent me a brand new one free of charge. The front sight is held one with one screw. I can't imagine they would want to go through the trouble and expense to have a gun sent back so they can screw on a new front sight.
Well, since it's a new gun, and it left the factory damaged, why should the OP have to work on it? If the ding is that obvious it's a distraction when shooting, I think it's mo-re of an issue than just being "my gun". While I agree the OP should have inspected the firearm more thoroughly before taking possession/transfer, it's still a gun that left the factory with a bunged sight. Iffin' Ruger is the company that all the Ruger fanboys claim, one would think they would want to make it right.....themselves.

Look everyone. There is NO screw. There is NO pin. The entire front sight is an integral 1 piece unit... ?silver soldered? to the barrel
I'd happily replace it myself.

if it's not a part that requires a factory install the WILL send you just the parts. A pinned or bolt on front sight would probably fall into that category.

I'm sending in my Gp100 to have the pawl replaced, which I lost while I had the thing apart, and honestly I'll be surprised if they charge me for fitting a new pawl, even tho they should (and if they do I'll happily pay for it).

Personally, I'll fix what ever small details are needed without resorting to a warranty repair. That's just me tho.

My older SBH has a soldered on front sight. Its older tho....was this BH new old stock?

No. It's a late ser. #. There are tons of pics of *blued .357 Blackhawks on GB that show a no pin, no screw front sight. I'm not sure why there is confusion on this. This does not apply to stainless. There is a pin on those.

interesting, I though that Ruger had gone to pins on all the newer ones.....shows what I know

Ok I did some checking and it seems that the big bore Rugers do have a sweated on sight. So it will need to go back to Ruger. A guy I was shooting with years ago filed down the front sights on TWO BH guns. I don’t remember why he said he did that but he sent both guns back to Ruger and they installed new sights. They sent a note and explained it was a one time free fix. Don’t do it again.

Thanks for the offer on sending pictures. But I think you will be happier with a new front sight. And Ruger has a fast turn around on repairs.

The smaller bores like the single sixes in 22 and 32 mag do have screw on front sights. So that is part of the confusion.

Ruger would be wise to pin a front sight on the blued models as they do the stainless. I can't even imagine why they dont. I sent them an email and offerred pics to them. Will see. If not, I'll put a few coats of orange paint on. That will fill the serrations in, as quite a few are squished now and it will even out the sight picture.

I can certainly see how a twinkle would be distracting on a sight. I'd be inclined to blacken or cold blue it - most definitely. Without seeing the ding, hard saying what I'd do but if it's a straight shooter (w/ a very small blemish) not destined for a life on the shelf, I'd rectify it myself or locally.

When having a gun shipped to an FFL I am always sure to tell them not to open MY package, DO NOT disturb the packaging material on MY box in the least. I had an FFL that was in the habit of opening packages and destroying/crushing the packaging material before I arrived. How do I know a gumby behind the counter didn't ding my gun as it's being passed around for everyone to handle? What if a gun wasn't properly packaged and protected from knocks in transit. Good luck filing a claim after the packaging material has been destroyed/disappeared. The first time they opened a packaged I was very surprised and a little incensed, explained why and 'never again'. The second time I read them a colorful riot act. No problems since as they adopted the no-touch approach as store policy.

Every time you pick that gun up, you will be reminded that there is something about it that bothers you. A new gun should bring pleasure, not angst.

Return it and let them make it right.

I'm a little unclear on the damage. Is it on the serrated side?

If so, I'd probably just dress the serrations with a file and cold blue it. Be done with it and shooting in an hour.

Or use it as an excuse to replace with a shilouette sight as is my preference.

On the lower 1/3 of the sight, it has a few gouges on the side. Then on the lower 1/3 serrations, about 50% are flattened, BUT ARE BLUED. Not white metal. So in effect, it is a bright blue finish, causing the glare. Now this was from the factory, so I don't know what happened. Damaged by tooling then blued? Who knows. There is no touching it up witha file. Believe me.

Update. I emailed Ruger from their website. No reply whatsoever. Yay Ruger! I've had alot of them, but this will apparently be my last. Too bad. They once sent me a free set of scope rings when I contacted them to purchase them. Over and above customer service then. Things have changed. I'll break out the orange paint I guess.

How long did you wait? Have you tried calling?

If you didn't call do so, I generally get an email in response when fill out the form on the site, but it's gotten lost in my junk mail. Every time I've ever called I've had immediate and good service. I actually need to call them tomorrow to get a FedEx lable to send my gp100 back for a part I lost.

11 days. Enough to at least acknowledge my email. I offered to send them pics. I didn't call. One chance only. I won't beg. I'll sell it cheap first, or give it away.
