OMG! WalMart to stop selling all handgun ammo!

I'm all for not shopping at Walmart. I just recognize that most people don't care, (including gun owners) and the tiny number that do won't make a difference to Walmart. You know who it will make a difference to though? The local gun store who actually supports what we believe in. I had this discussion with some friends today. For me, it's not so much about boycotting some mega corporation as it is about supporting businesses who I want to stay around. Walmart could go out of business tomorrow and I wouldn't give a rat's ass. If the gun store that I frequent went out of business I'd be quite disappointed.

Sound business plan. At least they can keep offering all of those cheap goods made in China... oh wait.

Shipping costs alone kills the deals you see online unless you order in bulk, many people can't do that for whatever reasons. Academy sports here has decent prices but not every place has a place like that some towns only have a Walmart. If they truly do account for a fifth of all ammo sales in the country it's gonna be worse than people are making it out to be. I don't put much stock in conspiracy theories but if antis went after ammo vs the guns themselves they're on the right track.

From what I've been seeing buying bulk is worse as far as shipping. Sites that advertise "free shipping" just add it in to the cost.

I dont know what 1k rds of 9mm weighs but I've carried it out of WM plenty of times. Hint, it's not light. Based on sites I've seen where they add the shipping in it seems like around $30 is probably on par.

I bought most of my 9mm fmj at Walmart because it was cheap. Hell they had 200rd boxes of federal 223 55gr for 55 dollars on Friday.

Walmart destroyed many small businesses in flyover country. And antis are clamoring to end online sales. Where are you going to get your ammo when retailers stoop to political pressure and stop selling it?

He was talking about Walmart removing those things, not Dicks. I seriously doubt they made any difference at Walmart. If they did, I'm sure it was very short lived.
Read what he said.

He was speaking about all the various boycotts.

Yes, they’ve had an effect.

"Our priority is to provide you safety"

Your priority as a retailer should be to provide me products and convenience so that you can make money. I'll worry about my safety....

This is a major nut jab to me because I buy most of my ammo from walmart because it's cheaper than anywhere else besides online.

I am all about supporting the small business but when the small business wants .46 cents a round for .223 I have to look elsewhere otherwise I cant pursue my hobby feasibly enough...

Well this definitely goes down as a major win for the anti jerks. Making it a much smaller world for people like us....shame. Damn shame.

I bet the bodies of the departed weren't even cold before a gaggle of teary eyed super woke liberal lunatics were skulking outside the corporate offices haranguing all about "how do you feel knowing that you sell the ammunition used to slaughter your own customers, etc...."

Speculation but I can bet money it was probably going on and on like that before the CEO caved.

i'll send them a list of my receipts from walmart for the past month or two, and a note about how i won't be shopping there as it's obvious they are trying to cut down on the smell of trump voters
Trust me they wont give a dam

Local stores will jack their prices up knowing they're the only game in town, but internet sales will gain big from this decision and rightfully so. The ammo selection at Walmart has gotten a lot better over the years, but it's still terrible and often overpriced. When .32 ACP costs $10 more a box than online, it's a hard pill to swallow.
This is going to hurt people in small towns.
Really? What the hell did we do before 1992? As I recall things were fine.

I briefly went over this in my previous post but to clarify my position.... I would love to support local over the big corporate giant, but the local gun shop has had the same 5 boxes of 555rd .22lr on the shelf collecting dust since snow was on the ground for $45. Walmart $15 for the same exact case. This goes for basically all calibers. If it was a discrepancy of a couple few bucks I'll go local all the way but if you're going to gouge the ever loving lights out of me and rip me off, I'm sorry. I'm going to wal mart. It's not that I dont care, it just simply puts it out of reach...

I just dont understand how these guys can watch their ammo sit on the shelf for months at 3x the price and not adapt to a lower profit margin in order to move more product.

I'm not a business owner so idk, but if you want me to shop in your store you need to do better than 3x the $price$ of the place I can get it 10 minutes away from.

I feel badly for our brothers & sisters that have limited, or no other, places close to fulfill these needs.

But in the long run, the immorality that has run Walmart as a citizen in local communities (study up on their tactics as they have placed stores in smaller locations around the world) will catch up with them via these type decisions.

They think they can do no wrong and rule with an iron fist.

Americans will overcome their mind set and arrogance.

Walmart is making the same boneheaded move Kmart did in a way. I am a former SS Kresge employee. Notice “former”? In 1990, Kmart was 2nd to Sears who was #1 in the nation. Kmart decided to forget their base, and go for the higher class crowd and did a expensive major remodel of the store to compete with Sears for #1.... of course it failed because they sluffed off their base of people who made them what they were. They quit selling guns, ammo, bowling balls, and other common items that the “every man” needed. So along comes Walmart selling that stuff, and everybody ran from Kmart.
Walmart is now dismissing the class of folks that made them. If they don’t watch out, history can repeat itself. Another company will come along to pander to that base.
Kmart was considered too large to fail, but it sure did.

Except they dont even sell ammo nor guns in a number of their stores now. Course I haven't a clue of the actual numbers breakdown of who does and doesn't. Only anecdotal evidence of the number of ones around me..

i don't trust you. boycotts have often been effective. many others are sending the same message. i don't expect them to reverse their decision, and actually think while painful to some, it will be better for the market as a whole. still, we should send a message

my LGS is the same. the reason they tell everyone is they can't compete. walmart sells it cheaper than they can buy it.
but....
now that walmart is out of the business, they can compete again. will they sell for the price walmart was? of course not. it will be more expensive.
but we are much better off having lots and lots of small retailers, rather than one large one that can cause a significant disruption in the supply of ammo. we're lucky they didn't just stop all sales and destroy the existing inventory

I've bought 9mm for $.16-.17 a round shipped several times over the past year. Sign up for gundeals or wikiarms or whatever. Lots of good deals.

Yes, you’re right, when Walmart first came, they had everything down to handguns. Then thru the years it’s disappearing bit by bit. That’s how Kmart started to do all thru the ‘80’s. By time the 90’s hit, they said to hell with the low class people and tried to pander to the upper class. I was there from 82-90, and it was a slow process at first, but in 88 the changes was so radical and fast that everyday the store was different. The low class put them on the map, and in the end, darned sure took them off. If Walmart keeps up this slow slide, another will step in to snatch up the base.

I've been looking since this afternoon for this "oh so more cheap" online ammo and haven't found it.

I would get 1k rounds of Federal brass for a little over $170 out the door from WM.

Anybody care to share a link for online brass cased that isn't more expensive?

That is because in the end it usually isn't. I have spent a lot of time searching ammo prices, using ammo seek and such and in the end it comes out the same or more as Walmart at least with common calibers. I even watch a certain seller on gun broker who constantly lists cases at .01 starting bid and magically every time in the end the bid ends at the same amount you can buy from another online store.

Unless you are ready to spend $500 or $1000 at a time a shipping fee is usually not waived. Buy local with taxes, or buy out of state with no tax but shipping, it usually comes out the same, and that is with certain gun purchases also.

Online biggest advantage is seeking out certain brands or specialty ammo you can't find local.

The only places where it might matter is places like California where they nail you left and right with fees, taxes and regulations.
