CMP sent an email today announcing the existence of “special rack grade” Garands. They are rack grade pitted receivers with new barrels and stocks for $650. The receivers are described as “heavy pitting above the wood line” but one assumes CMP thinks they are still safe to shoot.

Might be a way to get a good shooter at a (relatively) bargain price.

Hope its not "bottom of the barrel" kind of Garand. I have seen heavy pitting like that on 1916 Spanish Mausers, but still shootable.

Here is the official description from the CMP email:

"CMP is offering a Special Rack Grade for $650. The CMP Special Rack Grade (.30-06) M1 Garand, is a partially refurbished rifle with a refinished M1 receiver, new production criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver is the only part of the rifle that has been refinished. (emphasis mine) Remainder of the other parts have NOT been refinished. Receiver will have heavy pitting above the wood line...."

Why would anyone want to own one in that condition at almost any price? (It would have to be in the hundred dollar range for me to be interested, and only then if it were full functional and only then as some sort of SHTF 2nd line defense loaner gun.

So, to be clear, its not quite a gunsmith special, but better then a parts gun? More or less?

An "almost new", aught six repeater, for less than a grand, that qualifies for many military type matches, redone by a reputable, even historic American entity?
With the only part that shows any wear or abuse being the static receiver and all other parts replaced, as new, and refinished?

Sounds pretty good!
