Have You Changed Anything Relating To Self Defense Recently?

Pretty much the same routine, usually one carry gun and one reload, and I try to be situationally aware.

I have practiced drawing, moving and shooting a bit more.

I fear restrictions on my rights by politicians much more than the slight chance of running afoul of a crazed gunman.

Went up a caliber from 9 to 357 and out an inch from 2 3/4 to 3 3/4. Way better accuracy and control out to forty or so yards although giving up two rounds in capacity

Yes, I've become more lackadaisical.

Nothing recent. I added carrying and extra mag a few years ago. Need to find time to hit the range.
After my wife and younger brother died within months of each last year, that really took the wind out of me.
I hope to get back to the range soon. Before my life fell apart, I did start practicing at longer distances. Never thought I would have to worry a about someone possibly with a long gun.

The truth is that you shouldn't have to worry about defending against a whack job with a long gun. I hope and pray that your path would straighten and your strength be restored. Thats allot to deal with in a very short period of time.

Decided 10 rounds of .40 S&W was better than 6 rounds of .40 S&W, and better than 15 rounds of 9mm in a more compact package. Went from the XDS 40 to the G19 and then back down to the M&P40c...

I finally ponied up and got a good quality gunbelt and there really is a big difference. Specifically I got a Beltman bullhide, 1.5" with the internal stiffener. With the weather starting to cool off I'm shifting away from my LCP in a Nemesis pocket holster to a 9mm Shield or 2.0 Compact at 4:00 IWB. The interesting thing is with the aforementioned quality belt I'm noticing there's not as much difference in comfort when comparing the two 9mm pistols, nor is there a huge difference in printing. So my Shield, which was my first regular CCW, isn't getting out of the safe as often. The extra capacity with the Compact is nice but the bigger difference to me is I just shoot it quite a bit better.

Bought a LCP II to carry at the house. It's on me while I'm awake. It's small and light. Hopefully I can use that to fight my way to something bigger. Would love to carry my G19. But my BIL isn't 2A friendly. So until we move into our new house. (Nov 1st) his house his rules.

I'm not opening a discussion on motivations or reasons, I'm just curious if anyone has changed anything relating to their self defense routine, regimen, practice, firearm selection, etc. recently.

I'll lead off. Three years ago I moved to a new town that I consider to have less crime than my previous residence. As a result I stopped carrying my larger, primary carry gun and aside from donning my .357 for the occasional walk in the woods started carrying just a pocket .380. For a variety of reasons I went almost two years without firing a single practice round.

Recently I purchased a larger (compact) carry pistol and after running 600 "proving" rounds through it have begun carrying that in addition to the pocket .380. I have been making regular trips to the range and have been working on increasing my accuracy and reducing my target acquisition times and follow up shot times. When practicing at the range I almost always let my empty magazines drop without catching them and reload by drawing a fresh magazine from my mag holster while keeping my pistol up in my line of sight. Basically just getting back in the routine of running my pistol like I would in a fight.

What changes have you made?

After having an armed confrontation with a burglar I surprised in my home when I returned for lunch, I reconsidered. I was then carrying a .380 but felt laughably undergunned facing down the 225+ lb burglar.

I thought about it for a while and then bought a Shield in 40. I thought some more and then bought a Glock in 10. I think either is where I'll stay but to be honest, now with two armed confrontations in a year, I'd carry a Smith 500 if I could.

Why's your BIL ok with the LCP but not the Glock?

He doesn't see it. Out of sight out of mind. That and he doesn't know I carry it. He knows I have a few. He's never seen the inside of my safe. My sister has but not him

Proviso: I'm not opening a discussion on motivations or reasons …

Well, there goes most of what I would have said. So I’ll say this:

I carry less. I shoot less.

When I do carry, it’s often an S&W Shield 2.0, 9mm in a Tulster IWB/AIWB holster.

picked up a Ruger Standard MKII, so I would practice more. not going to carry it - just a way to practice more without going broke.

I guess when I really think about it I have changed a few things in my practice/training.

This year I took a professional SD training course.
I started loading my own ammo last year so my ammo availability for all my guns is less restricted and costly.
I broke up with my girlfriend a year and a half ago, so my shooting has increase due to having more time also.
Where as I used to shoot perhaps 4000-6000 rounds a year, I am now shooting 7000-10,000 rounds per year.
I used to more or less pack away the shooting gear for winter as we did not have an indoor range anywhere in the area, but now that we do I go shooting about every two weeks in winter also. I'm likely to get a membership this year and just make it a regular thing.

More importantly, I have started purchasing 6" steel portable spinner targets and setting one up at 20 years and the other at 25. I believe aim small, miss small. So honestly a man sized target at 10 yards now feel pretty easy to hit center mass, pretty fast. The greater benefit as I see it is I now transition between targets in one string of fire. To me it seems good practice for shooting at multiple attackers at varying distances, and the small targets means I'm more likely to hit an exposed body part if my attacker is behind cover. At least that's my theory. I will likely incorporate a shot clock to my practice this winter and next year, pending some serious back pain from an old injury, I plan to start incorporating more movement in my practice, using my vehicle as a source of cover.
