In a thread the other day titled "The LGS Had a Sale" I tell about how I got my new, used 686-6 with 3 Inch barrel for $476
Today I took it to the range. My buddy brought his 3 Inch GP100 so we could compare very similar guns.

When it comes to weight, size, balance and how the handle recoil there is no real difference between the 2. His Ruger has an incredibly smooth and light factory trigger. If I didn't know better I would swear he had it worked on. The 686 also has a very smooth pull, but it is a but heavier than the Ruger and some of my other Smiths . My gun was made in 2015 and May still need to break in
I started out sighting in. Previous owner had rear sight jacked all the way up. Was probably shooting 125-130gr 38 specials. Sure enough I was hitting high with 158 gr magnums

Got that squared away and was shooting good
We had 4 steel plates and 2 stands set up for the day. We kept the shooting inside 75 feet since the guns were short barreled
We did some close in self defense work with pocket carried I frames too. Here my buddy is point shooting from the hip while stepping back with his 638

With good results too! All 9 ring or better!

We each shot 100 magnums and 50 38 specials. Nothing like a couple hours of range time to put a smile on your face

I echo the sentiment by the late great Dave McCracken
"I live to hunt. It's my escape from a world more cruel, crazy and complicated than it needs to be"

I'd add shooting and fishing to my list however, shooting moreso. Good shooting Jones! I'd rather be at the range in 106 degree Texas heat than at the AC controlled office.

There was a nice 3" 686 at my lbs awhile back that I wished I had funds for at the time. They currently have a 3" 60 that I'm sadly too poor to get right now.

Maybe when the winter season starts up again and I get some more hours at my jobs

Great report ...Im hopeing next year to purchase a three inch barrelled 357mag and those two are on the top of the list ...

I have had a couple of 3” magnums over the years. Never a 3”, 686 but a 3”, M29-3, and a 3”, 657. Both were accurate but not that easy to carry as there wasn’t a lot of barrel below the belt to keep the grip frame from swinging out. Sold both and started pursing 4”, N frames.

A truly perfect afternoon, thanks for sharing .

I have a couple of 3" .357's, a 3" Model 13 and a 3" EWK VH shroud on a DW-15 (Both are in the picture on the right.)...the 3" GP 100 .44 is also represented, but it's not a magnum... .357's.jpg

(The M-19 is a 2 1/2")

Once I buy one...maaaaybe two more firearms I'll start to pine for a 3" King Cobra...especially if it's a high-polished version like some of the new Cobras are:thumbup:.

Stay safe.

Stay safe.

I have the stainless version of this critter and I really like it. Until my grandson came along I kept it in my desk at my home office for easy access. Now she resides in the safe with most of my revolvers until he grows a bit and gets introduced to gun safety.

I have a 3" blue GP100 & a 3" sp101 (327 Fed)

The 3" Sp101 (or similar), in my opinion, would be an ideal 'one pistol'. Small enough to carry concealed, yet large enough to put the hottest .357s downrange without giving you stress fractures. And the 3" barrel is the sweet spot there. I have a lot of handguns but it is my favorite.

My Dan Wesson M14-2 with a 3" EWK EH shroud & barrel and the factory "combat" grip along with its elder cousin by marriage CZ-52. I'm considering getting a 6" EWK barrel & shroud with an Aristocrat rib sight mounted on it and a Pachmayr grip to make the M14-2 a PPC clone/CCW dual-purpose weapon.
