Hello,
I live in WNY and I'm in the middle of doing my pistol permit application. I got a letter from the judge saying to appear in court on this date and time for approval or denial. I went to court and answered the questions he asked on something's on my background. He said his decision will come in the mail in 2 to 3 weeks. If he was going to deny it would he have done it right then and there or only be mail?

This is a good example of what all of our young folks need to know about big government that offers lots of "free stuff"... If you allow it to exist - they get to tell you what to do (or not)... States where that kind of philosophy rules.... are prime examples of what our future holds if we agree to elect those that have that mindset...

Surprise, surprise... places like New York, California and Illinois have very restrictive gun laws (and will have more of them the moment some new concern arises...). Not so surprising... that all of those restrictive laws have almost no effect on their rising crime problems...

That could go either way. It may be a matter of the judge's preference, the judge may need some time to process the hearing, or there may be some clause in the law mandating that you be notified in writing. I'm not licensed in NY and don't know a great deal about its laws, but a quick scan of the statute did turn this up:
NY legislature said:
4-a. Processing of license applications. . . . . In acting upon an application, the licensing officer shall either deny the application for reasons specifically and concisely stated in writing or grant the application and issue the license applied for. N.Y. Penal Law § 400.00 (McKinney)

Not to defend my state's gun laws, but Illinois is no where even close to NY or Cali. NO AWB, NO Mag Ban, Shall Issue CCW, Chi defacto pistol ban shut down by legal decision. It is a constant fight, no doubt. ISRA and NRA go to bat for us often.

Is the county you live in conservative or liberal? You say WNY is that the Rochester area? My brother lives in Fairport and got his no problem.

The county will have far more impact of whether or not you will get a permit in NY. I know when I was applying for my permit, the judge of my county was well known for not granting any permits over a couple decades. One thing to note is if you live, work, or worship in any other NY county, you can apply for a permit in that county. You do not have to prove residency. I never did get my NYS permit. I was denied a few months after I moved out of the state. Best of luck to you.
